Hi!
A new house has been built opposite the one I live in. Now, from that house, there is a clear view onto my balcony. I want to do something to block the view. I thought about installing trellises and growing climbing plants on them. Can anyone suggest climbing plants that grow quickly and also keep their leaves in winter?
Best regards, senor 😕 🙂

Climbing plants are definitely more attractive than looking at the neighbor's house, but they also attract quite a lot of insects and other creatures – I just wanted to mention this here because for exactly this reason, I finally removed my ivy after almost 15 years.

Hi sennor!
The appearance can really be improved with climbing plants. They work well on wooden and aluminum walls. However, I find trellis structures better in this regard, as they avoid the feeling of being “walled in” on your balcony. Planter boxes with climbing plants are also very practical.
Now about the planting:
Annual climbing plants are the best choice because they grow very quickly during their growing season. Most of them also produce beautiful flowers or fruits. It is important to provide a climbing aid for these plants. A framework made of wood or bamboo works well. You can also use wire or strings. With annual plants, you have the option to change the appearance every year.
Examples of climbing plants that work well for privacy screening:
- Balloon vine
- Beautiful creeper
- Bellflower climber
- Morning glory

Hello,
I think trellis panels are a good idea. Unfortunately, I probably won’t be able to start until next year, since it’s already too late now. But then I still have plenty of time to gather information. Do I really have to worry that my climbing plants will attract swarms of insects, or does that depend on the type of plant?
Best regards,

Gartenbauer24 Jul 2008 01:48Hello!
I will now share some information about a few climbing plants.
MOONFLOWER (Ipomoea tricolor):
The moonflower has very striking flowers, which is also reflected in its German name. The flowers are funnel-shaped and abundant. This plant thrives especially well during warm summers. When it rains or if the sun shines too strongly on the flowers, they close. The flowering period lasts from July to September.
Moonflowers develop very dense foliage, making them excellent for privacy screening. They prefer a nutrient-rich, lime-containing soil. The soil must not dry out during the growing phase under any circumstances. If you regularly fertilize the moonflower, it will produce many blossoms accordingly.
Sowing should take place between March and April. When planting outdoors, the spacing should be around 50cm (20 inches).
