Hello everyone,

what are your experiences with floor-to-ceiling windows with a fixed lower section or double doors with a French balcony on the top floor (see pictures)? The space is currently planned as one room (multi-purpose room for office, guests, play, etc., facing southwest) and should be able to be divided if needed.

Unfortunately, I have never had either of these window types in an apartment before. I would really appreciate your feedback. Should both options be roughly the same price?

Thank you very much.

Yellow detached house with gable roof, two upper windows, surrounded by trees.

Does a French balcony at least provide some of the balcony "feeling"?

A or B, but no hybrid: in my opinion, a French balcony with a single-leaf window door would look awkward.

The visually best option is floor-to-ceiling windows with a full glass balustrade on the outside.
This year, we had to retrofit this for our sitting windows, as it would otherwise be too dangerous for the little one.

Divide it into two; that way you can place a desk or something else in front of the window and still open the top part.

If definitely nothing should be placed in front of it, then a French balcony.
Honestly, I’ve never understood this—it’s called Feng Shui, I guess—I don’t like sitting with my lower body right in front of glass and never understand how others manage it...

I wouldn’t choose a fixed window at the bottom. They are just really difficult to clean. I’m constantly annoyed by that.
We decided on this because we could open the window at the top without the cats escaping.
In general, I’m not a fan of floor-to-ceiling windows. They look nice, but for example, in the bedroom, if we sleep with the window open, the blind has to be raised a bit to let air in. This means the entire lower part of the glass is left uncovered. I don’t like that and wouldn’t build it again.

.... who says the lower part has to be fixed?

I specifically placed the window in the walk-in closet for ventilating the bedroom; this also provides sound insulation right away.
