It’s simple, as is often the case in life: less is more ;-)
It just looks tidy and clean.
The effort for cleaning plaster surfaces is significantly less because people tend to be lazy about putting things away, for example when wiping the plasterboards. That’s my experience, but many people consider it less cozy.
I’m currently designing new light fixtures for the living and dining area... I really created a lighting massacre and every day I think, “God, how awful does this look?” So the drywall ceiling needs to be cut open again, patched, sanded, wallpapered, and repainted. Quite a considerable amount of work *grunt*
There will be 3 circles in the ceiling: two with a diameter of 1.2m (4 feet) and one above the dining table with a diameter of 1m (3 feet). They’re flush with the ceiling and have a continuous LED strip around them. My friend has this setup, and it looks absolutely amazing.
When finished, it will look like the picture.

I find it awful
Just like the blue back panel my soon-to-be ex-wife wanted
Okay, I agree with you. I would redo it too. :p But these things happen. Next time it will look awesome!
The blue back panel can probably be attractively covered with vinyl wrap.

...May I ask how large your plot is and what shape it has? I want to design mine the same way, setting the house further back and having a nice, spacious area in front. I really like it when there's a bit more space at the front than usual. Our plot is 567sqm (6100 sqft) and slightly trapezoidal, although to me it looks rectangular.
