Hello everyone,

I have had a specific question about assembling the IKEA BILLY bookcase for some time: Why does the back panel sometimes come loose during assembly?

I have noticed in several cases that the back panel either does not fit properly or partially detaches while putting the unit together, which can affect its stability. I am using the standard tools and following the instructions.

It seems to me that the issue might be related to how the back panel is attached – often thin particleboard or fiberboard panels are slid into a groove. I wonder whether the problem is due to the material, the fitting, the assembly instructions, or possible installation errors.

Has anyone had similar experiences and can explain why this happens with BILLY models and how to best prevent it?

Thank you in advance!

That’s a really good question! It happened to me occasionally as well, and I think it’s often because the back panel isn’t inserted perfectly straight or cleanly into the groove. You need to be very careful and slide it in evenly. If it’s at an angle, it won’t fit firmly and can come loose.

I would recommend gently wiping the back panel before inserting it to remove any dust or fibers – that worked wonders for me! So: be patient when inserting it, and it will hold more securely :-)

The back panel can come loose if the groove does not fit precisely or if the back panel is too thin. Keep the back panel straight and slide it in gently; do not force it.

Most of the time, back panels come loose when they are installed too quickly or with too much force during assembly. Gentle adjustments usually help.

I avoid bending the back panel too much during installation.

I think the root cause should be addressed more deeply.

is definitely a factor, but not the only one.

It would be interesting to know if IKEA has changed the material thickness or the groove dimensions over the years of production and whether this leads to fit issues.

Are there also differences between the series (e.g., older vs. newer BILLY bookcases)?

Additionally, temperature fluctuations or moisture exposure during storage and transport could cause the back panel to warp slightly, reducing the precision of the fit.

Can anyone else share insights on this?

I had the same problem and found it really frustrating because in the end, you’re unsure if the shelf will be stable enough.

sounds plausible; I also had the impression that the back panel was slightly warped in places.

What I did then: I removed the back panel, gently wiped it with a damp cloth, let it dry a little, and then carefully reinstalled it. This helped it fit more securely. Perhaps a slight pre-treatment is important here as well.
