Hello everyone,

I am planning to assemble an IKEA Billy bookshelf and have a specific question that probably requires some practical advice from you. Specifically, I want to attach the back panel of the bookshelf without using screws. My question is: What alternatives are there to securely and stably fix the back panel of a Billy bookshelf without using screws?

I prefer to avoid drill holes or visible fasteners that would affect the appearance. At the same time, the back panel needs to be firmly attached so that the bookshelf remains stable and the back panel does not develop loose spots. What tips and tricks do you know, maybe using tape, clips, special adhesives, or other materials that have proven effective?

I look forward to hearing about your experiences and approaches!

Hello Rako51,

interesting question! The challenge with fixing the back panel without screws is that the back panels of IKEA shelves like BILLY are usually made of thin MDF or hardboard, which naturally have low inherent stability and often do not hold reliably over time with adhesive-only methods or staples.

One of the technically cleanest methods is using self-adhesive metal clips or brackets specifically designed for furniture. These are installed with high-quality mounting adhesive or double-sided tape—such as 3M VHB tape, which offers very strong adhesion.

However, you should make sure that the surface is thoroughly degreased before applying tape or glue. I also recommend temporarily fixing the back panel mechanically first, for example with clamps, until the adhesive has fully cured.

If you want to avoid drilling and visible fasteners altogether, you might also consider special furniture strips for back panels that can be flush-mounted from the inside, or tiny screw clamps that sit inside—though these are small screws, even if barely visible.

I’m curious about the height and depth of your BILLY shelf so we can better address stability and potential loads. How tall is the shelf? And why do you want to avoid screws completely? Is it for aesthetic reasons, or because it’s rental furniture that needs to be dismantled?

This way, we might better assess the possible alternatives.

I believe it is important to question why screws should be avoided in the first place. Screws provide the safest and most durable connection for furniture back panels due to their mechanical fastening.

This is crucial because thin back panels can crack under stress if they are fixed incorrectly.

If the reason is purely aesthetic, at least recessed screws or small nails could be considered, which remain hardly visible. Alternatively, a strong adhesive tape might be an option, but I doubt how long it would hold on MDF.

I would also be interested to know what kind of load the shelf needs to support. Just books or also heavy decorative items?

Hi everyone! 🙂

I really like the idea of building without screws – sometimes less is more, and having fewer visible fasteners can really enhance the look of the shelf. I remember using small double-sided adhesive pads, usually meant for mirrors, to attach the back panel of my BILLY unit. That worked well for the lightweight back panel, but only because I had secured the shelf to the wall.

True, sometimes you just have to find a compromise.

Oh, and if your main goal is to stabilize the back panel rather than support weight, strong painter’s tape or even construction adhesive might be enough. But be careful if you plan to take the shelf apart later.

Hope this helps for now 🙂

I attached the back panel of my Billy bookshelf using special furniture clips. You can install them at the top and bottom without screws. They are available at any hardware store. Just snap them in; they hold very well.

Painter’s tape on the back works well for light loads – it is invisible and can be removed without leaving any residue. However, it only provides limited stability.
