Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

After May 2015:

One of the two stretched wooden frames can be seen at the top in #6.584, page 1098.
We have two of them on the ground floor, about 150cm (59 inches) high and 91cm (36 inches) and 55cm (22 inches) wide.
Even just these two have broken what I would call the reflective "ping-pong hall" effect.
That’s the principle—using fabric to reduce sound reflection (similar to how curtains and carpets work). The larger or more fabric surface you have, the better.

A simple test would be to pin or hold a cloth or towel against the wall (just for testing purposes). That should already help.
The final fabric should be colorfast (linen, for example, is, unlike jute).

We specifically ordered linen (from flax, not cotton) from a weaving mill in Ireland.
It is a heavier upholstery fabric in blue-green (color "inky Pool"), very thick at about 550 grams per square meter (18 oz per square yard) — I can only assume whether lighter fabric would have the same sound-absorbing effect. A canvas with print might also work, but it needs to be large enough. We wanted plain fabric, no prints, just a solid color.

(By the way: the history of linen production in Ireland is quite fascinating!)

Do you happen to have a contact or a website?
I’m really interested—it seems like a brilliant solution if you don’t want any patterns.

Thanks!

In our room, the ceiling creates a pleasant acoustic environment without any echo. It is from Ligno Trend and looks like this.

Materials around 100 Euro plus tools and shipping.

I had stretcher frames custom made, a slightly thicker version with 4.2 x 2.8 cm (1.65 x 1.1 inch) slats, sized 151 x 91 cm (59.4 x 35.8 inches), costing about 35 Euro. Wooden slats alone are not much cheaper but can’t be stretched. Only with a stretcher frame can you tighten the fabric at the corners and crossbars using the keys once it’s attached. There are plenty of videos on YouTube about this.

Linen fabric costs 25 Euro per square meter.

I stretched it myself using a stretching clamp (20 Euro) and a standard stapler set (around 8 Euro). Added some sawtooth picture hangers, and it’s done. Overall, the costs are reasonable.

If you then glue pyramid foam (3 cm thick, 20 Euro per square meter) behind the stretched fabric or canvas, you get the acoustic panels mentioned above for little money and with a real effect.

The ceiling above the ground floor is in place. The poor workers erected the first floor yesterday in pouring rain!

After living in the house for a little over a year, we are now making our first improvements that we initially decided against. So, out with all the reserves that are no longer needed.
