Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

With such a large lampshade, I would always expect a conflict between "There is no glare" and "I can still see the person sitting across the table." Is there really an optimal height that achieves both?
Yes, that would be the mentioned 60-70cm (24-28 inches), depending on the depth of the lampshade.

And then, as mentioned, there is also the head-bump factor when standing up...

Edit: For some models, there are retrofit diffusers available to reduce glare.

We have these black metal frame lamps above the dining table, so the bulbs are completely visible and there is no glare at all. Maybe your lamps are just too bright? At 60-70cm (24-28 inches) above the table, you can’t really see who is standing on the other side when seated, and I think the bulbs will still be visible since the lampshade is very wide open. When setting or wiping the table, you’re also likely to bump your head on them.

Best regards

That’s exactly what I meant. If the lamp hangs so high that I can look underneath, then with such a large shade I can also look inside and will be blinded by the bulbs.

With a fixture featuring a long body (and a wider opening at the bottom), there is no glare, even though it is hung fairly high in our space. It is also available with a long suspension cable, 5 or 6 meters (16.4 or 19.7 feet). The top is open, which nicely showcases the cable. Ours has a 21 W LED bulb, dimmable. A diffuser can be added afterward.

The scaffolding is up. The timber house will be delivered next week. We are looking for backfill material and still need about 2000m³ (70,600 ft³).
Construction site with concrete foundations and scaffolding, at the lakeside with boats and mountains in the background.
