R.Hotzenplotz8 Sep 2018 17:02Until now, I had only known garage doors that roll up inside a housing box within the garage. In our case, some unusual rails were installed. I don’t like them at all. Under the rail of the left door, there is maybe only about 5cm (2 inches) of clearance between my head and the rail. I need to ask why the two rails are at different heights since, according to the construction plans, both doors are supposed to be 2.135m (7 feet) high. I will have to measure the doors themselves tomorrow.

Though I doubt that would have matched your aesthetic preferences. Then it's all good. But I still need to find out why one door is lower than the other, which wasn’t clear from the plans.

But you should be more involved with your house. When you only build once in your life and otherwise have no experience with these things, it’s easy to overlook that a topic you take for granted can have different solutions. In this case, it’s not a big problem apart from the difference in height.
I don’t think I can be more involved... but as a layperson with little technical interest, it’s more a matter of efficiency anyway.

Alternatively, a side-hinged sectional door could have been used, avoiding the overhead mechanism. This way, you can easily have a door height of 2.50 meters (8 feet 2 inches), allowing you to walk through with a hat or helmet on, and when there is limited space under the garage ceiling, you can still use that area for storage (e.g., for roof racks with boxes, sleds/skis, or other bulky items).
