Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

Why do so many houses in Germany look so dull? Gable roof, hip roof, flat roof, no corners, no edges, as long as they are square, it’s fine.

I wish that were true. Unfortunately, it is very common to try to "spice up" simple basic shapes in as many ways as possible – and also the

Accordingly, the interior layout is almost identical to that of row houses. Obviously inspired by McMansion Hell, the Frisian gable is considered the highlight of the Tuscan Bauhaus-style substitute villa with floor-to-ceiling corner windows. The "property ladder" is, to put it mildly, unpopular in Germany – the delusion "you only build once" is still the prevailing mindset here, so all current (and ideally future) homeowner wishes must be crammed into a single house.

“Here” means you actually wanted to insert an image?

The madness of individualism drives this strange phenomenon: despite the small number of housing needs types, it is believed that only a "custom design" can do justice to the task. Germans never love their uniformity alone, but always paired with its denial. Simplicity yes – but please not without the self-image of being highly unique. At the same time, the "best-selling model" is the Flair 113, which is in a way the EW 65 of the reunified Federal Republic of Germany. From an international perspective, we must be quite strange creatures.

Accordingly, the interior layouts are almost identical, like in terraced houses. Here is a general contractor from my area, Webb Brown Neaves. Around here, people want houses to look nice from the street. Kitchens are always located near the garden.
I live in Belgium. Apparently, people here don’t care if houses look nice. There’s something like a loosely enforced building code. Its first rule seems to be: build ugly, even if you could build nice. Here are a few amusing examples (can be found under: ugly Belgium houses).

@evelinoz, would you be happy if your neighbors built one of these charming little homes? They are definitely, uh, “individual” or “loosely arranged” (two adjectives that probably should always be highlighted in red, so you see the nonsense from afar).

Two-story house with gray facade, garage door on the left, two triangular door openings in the middle.

Building facade made of light bricks, blue door, two slanted windows like eyes and a shadow as a mouth.

Modern house with slanted walls, large windows, and white brick, front garden.

Modern house with central round tower, tiled roof, and well-maintained front garden.

Two-story house with brick and yellow facade, red tiled roof, front garden behind brick wall.

Street view of a red brick house with white entrance, window facade and tree in front.

Castle-like red brick building with battlements, round tower, white door and arched windows, gravel area.

Two-story red brick house with stepped gable on street corner, tree on the left.

Street scene: old white plastered house with peeling facade next to a modern brick house.

The castle is really great; I would take it immediately if I had enough space for the wild garden around it! (However, the windows are terrible, why are there circles in them??!)

The castle is probably just a Potemkin facade; I suspect behind the battlements there is a sloping roof of a bungalow. But I like the terraced middle house with the grim face.

They all look like failed surgeries.

I thought that’s called "loosening up".
