Our neighbors have three boys (real little rascals...) and the two older ones first tested if the youngest could fit through. Result: he fit! :-)
On another note, how can you soundproof the shaft? In our utility room, the heating system, ventilation unit, and what feels like the washing machine and dryer running three times a day make a lot of noise. I wouldn’t want that noise to be heard upstairs...

Cover at the bottom, cabinet door in the kids’ bathroom, and cover at the top in the master bathroom.
The noise doesn’t bother me as much there, but the airflow does.
