Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

We have a 60cm (24-inch) protective area in the soapstone stove’s structure up to the parquet flooring. Despite this, we still have two burn marks on the parquet. When adding wood, a log can easily throw glowing ash beyond that area. This is especially true because when loading wood, you are reaching into the hot stove, so the process is less slow and controlled than during the initial loading. Therefore, I recommend everyone to have a larger protective area.

guckguck is right – if you ever have a fire and the expert determines that this protective measure was not in place, they won’t pay you a dime, even if the fire was caused by something completely different. So at least remember to place the glass panel in front of the stove before the expert’s visit.
Fortunately, that is complete nonsense.
If it could be proven that the fire was caused by the missing glass panel, the insurance company might have grounds for a claim for damages.
If that is not the case, then it certainly does not matter. Think the situation through. The insurance company would always be able to find something that wasn’t right. There must also be a causal connection.

We didn’t want tiles either because of all the grout lines. We installed the same granite there as the fireplace has.

What exactly is so unpleasant about grout lines? After all, granite isn’t seamless like terrazzo either.

I like your staircase! What are the dimensions of the steps on the structural staircase and the treads? How much do they "overhang"?

You’re asking me questions. The rough opening was 1m (3.3 ft), then minus plaster, and I can measure how much the treads overhang for you this evening if I remember.

What’s so bad about joints? After all, granite isn’t joint-free like terrazzo.

Now we only have two joints. If you can even call them that. The slabs are placed edge to edge: one slab on the left, one on the right, and one at the front. You could probably have gotten similarly large tiles, but they likely wouldn’t have matched the look of the granite on the fireplace.
