Yes, grandpa's standard brick size is no longer popular, vertical joints are left dry, and bed joints are glued instead of being mortared as before. All this saves a lot of time.

Nordlys somehow made me think of a ghost town in the Wild West. The only thing missing are the cowboys.

No, something else was missing from that list: the vehicles of the DIY enthusiasts, Mercedes station wagons on the verge of retirement, with small trailers attached. So not cowboys, more like knights of the sorry-looking kind.
