I guess: No island, but rather a second row of cabinets. We are planning the same. Much cheaper than islands, takes up less space in the room (you need to be able to walk around islands, and possibly open doors on both sides), and in my opinion it also looks good. If desired, you could place a dining table with one end against this wall.

What does the switch in the wall control, which can be seen in the pictures?

That’s why I put quotation marks around it. Still, I would expect something like that more above the "living" area than (just) above the "work" area.
