Good evening.

I have been thinking a lot because our terrace faces the street side (turning bay), and we want some type of privacy screen.
I would like a drywall structure, about 2 meters high with masonry elements, link removed.

Has anyone had experience with something like this? What costs should we roughly expect? The heights will vary, but should be between approximately 1.50 m (5 feet) and 2.00 m (6.5 feet), and about 5.00 m (16.5 feet) long.

I also welcome any other great suggestions.

Reinforcing steel mesh or stacked wood is also nice

Exactly! More urban gardening instead of boring standard fences and walls! 😉

I think a fence is a good option. From your side, you could grow climbing plants on it as suggested.

I also like the idea of a gabion wall. They come in various designs.

Gabions can be customized. Different types of stones and even lighting are possible. However, please pay attention to the mesh size. Especially for fence gabions, it is recommended to choose a tight mesh. There are many ideas to explore.

Constructing a freestanding dry-stone wall at a certain height is quite a challenge. It requires reinforcement anchored in the foundation that extends up through the wall, as well as side anchoring to embedded posts in concrete or to the house wall if possible.

How about a gabion fence (essentially two fixed fence panels with a narrow gap between them, filled with stones)? Alternatively, a solid wooden fence could work, such as a concrete/wood fence system.

Hello,
may I share a pro-wall opinion?
You can cover it permanently with ivy, then it becomes a real piece of nature.
I am currently considering a privacy screen toward the street as well. I think 50 € per square meter is reasonable if it lasts for many decades without maintenance.
However, I am also concerned about the foundation and construction costs. O.O
I will call a relevant company next week, and if I find anything interesting, I will report back here.
Best regards

I would only let ivy grow if the distance to the house is far enough. Ivy is toxic and once planted, it keeps spreading continuously.

Personally, I wouldn’t want that stuff in my garden voluntarily!

Our gabion wall was completed today. 🙂 Pictures will be posted tomorrow in the construction diary.
It is two meters (6 ft 7 in) high and 13 meters (43 ft) long.
We really like it as a retaining wall. As a privacy fence, it would be too bulky, especially since our construction has a depth of one meter (3 ft 3 in).

Thin gabions at 2 meters (6 ft 7 in) height don’t look as good as I initially thought. 😳

So now we’re wondering whether to plant a hedge instead of building another gabion wall.
WPC (wood-plastic composite) would also be nice, but unfortunately it’s not exactly cheap. 🙄
