It heats the house and the water – and I have the comforting knowledge that I no longer burn oil. Without the sidewall, the unit had a "hiccup" during winter once (something froze and made loud rattling noises). Closing that side was the advice from our installer, who, according to his own statement, is still getting familiar with heat pumps.
I trust him, and so far it’s working well.

What you’re creating there is a dream.Maybe you would regret it less if I said that we wouldn’t have done the project in this form if we had estimated the scope (time/cost) more realistically. Our opinion might have been different without COVID, including construction cost increases and unexpected (or expected) new additions to the family.
However, if you have enough money and the right company, I would always choose to renovate an old farmstead. I just love the atmosphere.
