Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

Fortunately, I can only share positive experiences regarding my health. I have had rheumatoid arthritis for about 15 years, with nearly all major joints inflamed and severely damaged (hips, knees). This often led to limited mobility, sometimes to the point where I couldn’t walk easily (only with great difficulty using crutches, etc.). Then the building project began, and I regularly had to climb up and down scaffolding, carry materials, lay cables, install insulation, do drywall work, lay flooring, and so on.

For me, it was like a forced rehabilitation that really worked wonders. Right after the construction, I was actually quite fit, but unfortunately, that improvement is already declining again 😳. Do I have to start building all over again? Oh, and by the way, something did break. My glasses were weaker than a batten 🤨

Everything nicely symmetrical – square and practical, as I see it 🙂
Symmetry isn’t considered modern and is therefore not very popular in housebuilding these days. I think our house looks "old-fashioned" in a good way, and that’s exactly what I like about it.

Pastel colors aren’t trendy either, but they have a positive effect on me, so it will be painted vanilla yellow. It fits well in our street (the first houses were built 10-15 years ago) because there isn’t a color that isn’t represented there. I like that and even find it amusing. Our neighborhood is nicknamed "Legoland" by the original residents. A few streets away, there’s a larger area with houses painted exclusively in white and anthracite, which is more modern and surely appeals to the people living there. 🙂

I’m glad you like our house. Thank you for your compliments. 🙂

"Symmetry" in house building today is actually very popular – but the followers of this dogmatic symmetrical approach do not realize that it is not something similar, but the opposite of (harmonious) symmetry. They don’t notice the difference.

visual planning effort
You probably mean design planning?! Symmetry is a form of design, but it requires no real effort. Yes, it’s somewhat outdated, but the standard villa—often never designed by a professional architect—is quite popular on small plots due to space constraints. Mostly, and you’re right about this, it’s chosen for pragmatic reasons. However, it has nothing to do with architecture. Nor is it truly “stylish,” even if some call it that.

In our old village center, symmetry is sometimes even required. So, being "old-fashioned" is actually welcome. And in a way, it is pleasantly comforting. To this day, I am not sure whether it is a matter of taste or a primal desire for beauty. I would describe myself as a symmetry fan. Yet I still believe that symmetry and extravagance or individuality are by no means mutually exclusive. Some aesthetic principles become outdated, but symmetry (as well as the rule of thirds and the golden ratio) somehow do not belong to that category.

Could you please explain that in more detail? Unfortunately, I didn’t understand it. In most new buildings, I don’t really notice symmetry, just windows placed “randomly (?)” in various sizes. I’m probably one of those who don’t see the difference. ;-) However, I would really like to learn more.
