By the way: If my neighbors reacted like that to me, they would get to know me real quick... As long as you follow the legal quiet hours (from 10 p.m. onwards...), there’s really nothing they can do...
No, they can’t do anything to us, but I prefer a good – or at least tolerable – neighborhood over conflict.
As I said: next time we will politely but firmly make it clear that we won’t allow conversations, even if they get louder during visits, to be banned, and we won’t feel forced to keep everything quiet. Especially not when the neighbors themselves could simply close their windows first. Of course, we will continue to be considerate of the children’s need to sleep (we go to bed ourselves at that time on weekdays). And I will also politely point out that even if you can hear EVERY SINGLE WORD (!!), you can simply tune it out or look away. We don’t look over at them (we’re just not interested), and if they want to look over, that’s their choice – there’s not much exciting to see. I just don’t want to start a fight.

What are you stockpiling? My husband suffers from acute fear of running out of food when we have less than 5kg (11 pounds) of pasta *g*
No, mostly these are items with a long shelf life (flours, pasta, canned goods, legumes, etc.) and things we don’t need all the time (for example, my husband’s grilling equipment, the deep fryer, decanter, and so on).

(It also makes the neighbors more bearable)
