That’s exactly how I feel right now. I hope that by autumn we can at least see some kind of garden behind the house. I’m still not sure about that.

Seeding. I already seeded the area behind the house on Wednesday.

Let’s see if it works out. There’s no more budget left for sod. Or rather, other more important expenses still need to be covered.

Of course, you’ll be able to see quite a bit there even though it won’t be finished yet. Enjoy watching the changes in what you plant, how it grows, and experiencing the seasons in your new home. If you experiment with dry stone walls here and there to create structure, you’ll get an immediate visually strong improvement without having to cover the garden with paving. I would even find it a pity if my garden were already “finished.” We’re only just starting to implement humus-building measures in some areas; these take years but result in a very natural and stable environment. The goal is to create an approximately 400sqm (4,300 sq ft) area with shrubs that attract native birds and insects, producing berries and other wild treats, and where you can retreat with a book.

Sowing is the best method for those with patience. In my previous garden, I had better results with seeded lawns than with turf—even when the turf came from a supplier that provides durable types for sports fields. The lime content in the water doesn’t harm the lawn. If you need to walk over certain areas, place some natural stones there and walk on them. It looks nice and helps prevent the initial severe compaction caused by foot traffic.
