Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

If you are experimenting with dry stone walls

Thank you for your encouragement! We want to alter the hillside topography in the area "behind the house" as little as possible. We are also trying to avoid building walls in order not to change the natural terrain slope in the upper area. Due to the size of the property, we hope that we can achieve this with generous landscaping. We were aware that we would not have a low-maintenance garden; it should simply be manageable at all.

@Pinkiponk

There was a thread about this before. The property is a bit tricky! It has an elevation difference of 16m (52.5 ft). During clearing, we were unfortunately only able to save three oak trees, which I have defended so far against every excavation and basement contractor. These trees are now the foundation for the garden design.

@Solveigh

I’m curious to see how your garden will turn out... We don’t have any plan yet on how to design ours. I also have an 11 m (36 ft) height difference and managed to save two large yews. But first, the house has to be finished; the garden will come next year.

@Mellina We will probably still be working on it next year, as we are doing a lot ourselves. In the end (when the budget runs out), the gardener always seems to get affected.

Have you ever been to Giardina? It’s a great source of inspiration. However, for us on the other side of the border, it’s not affordable.

Sowing is the preferred method for those with patience. In my previous garden, I had better results with seeded lawns than with turf rolls – even when the turf came from a supplier that also provides durable varieties for sports fields. The lime-rich water doesn't affect the grass. If you need to walk on certain areas, place crushed stones there and step on those instead. It looks nice and helps prevent the initially terrible soil compaction from foot traffic.

I’ve now adjusted the sprinklers so that I no longer need to step onto the lawn area. Our three-year-old also understands that he’s not allowed on it.

I still need to work on the patience part, though, since I’m normally a fairly impatient person.

Spotted the first blade of grass today.

A single blade of grass sprouting from dark, crumbly soil with gravel particles.

Looks like I can start the lawn mower as soon as tomorrow.

After how many days did the stem appear?

I sowed the seeds on Wednesday. Today, I found the first one sprouting.
