Funny…
Here in the North, brick veneer is the standard and somehow a must-have.
Rendered façades are for people who order a standard catalog house and avoid any additional costs…
(That was harsh and exaggerated) Exactly. It’s for people like us who are “poor,” but for people like us, the house is fully paid off, and the bank isn’t listed on the title deed, so it’s truly a home you own… I’ve often felt that you look down on us. K.
As someone from Bavaria, I never really considered clinker brick as an option. Simply because it is extremely rare in our region. I did like the look, but at the time, I didn’t think the additional cost was justified.
What didn’t occur to me, however, was that a clinker brick façade can save ongoing costs (no more need for painting) and that it makes the exterior more low-maintenance and weather-resistant.
That would have been an argument that could have put the extra cost in a different perspective.
But now, it’s too late anyway.

The classic masonry facade here was originally made of calcium silicate bricks, and later of aerated concrete blocks (Ytong). These materials absorb water. The weather issue here is driving rain, meaning wind-driven rain where no roof overhang provides protection. Traditionally, facing bricks were considered the best protection for masonry.
Today, however, modern renders offer the same level of water resistance. The downside of render is that you need to repaint it every few years. But for bungalows, this is not a problem – it can be done easily with a step ladder.

Hello.....?!?!?!
Always these pointless discussions... everyone does what they think is best and what they like.
I think some people here on the forum have nothing better to do than constantly make snide remarks and criticize things... don’t you all have anything else to do?
Now, pictures would be great again!

With us, you mostly see brick cladding only on old houses in village centers along the main street or on old train stations; in new residential areas, you rarely come across one. How is it in new residential areas in northern Germany? Approximately what percentage of houses there have brick cladding?
