I really like the uniformity of small front windows (cloakroom, WC, staircase, etc.). If I owned the plot, I would clear the bushes in the center facing the field, so they would only be on the left and right, creating an unobstructed sightline straight ahead into the distance. At the back, the view should also extend to the fields (in this case, horse paddocks). Unfortunately, not to the front. That’s why I specifically planted a beech hedge. Otherwise, the front area with the small west-facing terrace would always feel completely exposed. There is a road with many cyclists and pedestrians passing by. They also have a perfect view into the living room through the large window. Since I don’t like curtains or similar coverings and only use roller shutters for sun protection, there is a lack of privacy…

Maybe you’d regret it less if I say that we wouldn’t have done the project in this way if we had estimated the scope (time/cost) more realistically. Perhaps our opinion would be different without the impact of COVID, including increased construction costs and unexpected (or expected) new family members.
However, if you have enough money and the right company, I would always choose to renovate a traditional farmstead. I just like the atmosphere. Somehow, renovation was never really an option. I grew up hearing my grandfather always say, “Tear it down, build new. No matter how much money you put in, it stays old. I’ve already spent more than a new house would have cost.” Statements like that shape you from a young age.
Honestly, I don’t need stables, barn, tractor garage, and a residential house. Just the latter is enough, and it was rather practical and set too far back from the street. Now the house stands where the stable and manure heap used to be. According to heavy rainfall management, we are even considered white—that is, safe—while all other buildings on the street are red (high risk); the old one would have been too.
Nevertheless, I really like your project.
I’ll take more pictures when I get the chance. I’ve been living here since 2021, and whenever I have the time and motivation, I like to make changes inside or outside. That way, it never gets boring. The road is now fully completed (final construction), so there’s no more gravel or temporary setups. In between, a cold beer or coffee often keeps me from working.
