Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

Before March 2014:

After May 2015:

That looks like quite clayey soil (?)

Good eye [emoji1303] A nicely layered deposit of clayey loam (old farmland) on a solid sandstone base. Backfilling with the excavated soil is not possible since it cannot be compacted—meaning an almost complete replacement of the soil—but we knew that beforehand and have accounted for it. At least we don’t expect significant structural issues, and settlement cracks probably won’t be our biggest concern [emoji6]

Maybe it’s better not to start building right now. Winter is a dead season for civil engineering. It’s too cold and too wet.

There are no rules. Next to our second home, a small development is being built, all brick by brick. One company hasn’t worked for weeks, while another is laying bricks in heavy rain.

Is there any citable reference for this? The common practice at least in our area – with different general contractors – seems to be different somehow...

No, there is no reference.
However, it happened with several cases here.

At the time, I was puzzled why the work wasn’t progressing. In retrospect, this was given as an explanation.
I suspect it has something to do with drying. Unlike the board, it obviously cannot dry evenly over the entire surface.

Dear friends of housebuilding,

Yesterday morning at sunrise (see upper left part of the picture), the carpenter first had to sweep away the snow.

But then, under bright sunshine, everything happened quickly.

Around 3:30 p.m., everything was finished.
