I took the advice to heart (thank you for that!) and removed the mortar buckets from the wooden raised beds. Instead, I stapled drainage membranes all around. These now reach down to the ground, and tomorrow 1m³ (35 cubic feet) of topsoil will be delivered to fill them up. On top of that, I will add some pre-fertilized potting soil or something similar. This way, the shrubs should be protected for the winter – is that correct?

A trauma game for me. I love video games, but I always completely failed at The Sims. People starved, peed right next to the toilet, and something was always on fire. I’ll stick to first-person shooters.
I appreciate real life more. At least my husband can go to the bathroom by himself. 😀

I don’t have any photos to share yet. The hedge is green, and the hawthorn is just starting to bloom. The currants have already flowered, and there are small tiny fruits forming. Otherwise, it seems to be taking some time...
In the meantime, I added a few more plants: 2 broom shrubs, 1 columnar cherry tree, and a silver willow, which has been pruned down to about 1 meter (3 feet) and is intended to become a pollarded willow, so it will only grow wider.

Yesterday, the shrubs, topsoil, and potting soil were delivered. Today, we distributed the delivered cubic meters into the four planter boxes and arranged the shrubs nicely. We filled them up with soil and watered them well. I’ve even received some compliments from the neighbors ;-) and I already feel more comfortable on the terrace deck. The only thing missing on the street side is some privacy screening, and the hedge will probably take a long time to grow tall and dense enough.

And why didn’t you plant them directly in the ground? There is a very high chance they will dry out during the winter.
