I thought a garden chat and photo thread would be a good idea.
This way, we have a space to share current pictures and discuss dandelions and other plants.

In our area, there is always a plant exchange in April and September where private individuals sell their cuttings or plants they want to get rid of. You also get an explanation about the plants, and it’s a great way to start a basic collection at a low cost. Maybe there is something like that where you live as well. That’s amazing! I’ll ask around to see what’s available here. I hope we have similar exchanges, that would be fantastic. My family has already started growing cuttings for us. My mother has three cuttings from one rootstock that have taken root, and my sister says she will pot some of her oak seedlings for me so I can plant them here. Oaks are very common trees here; there was even once an “Oak Tree Beer” from this region.

WilderSueden16 Jul 2023 10:29I really like oaks and would love to have one, but they simply grow too large. I would always plant trees as far away from the house as their full height.

She also potted a walnut tree cutting for us. Those are very beautiful trees, but they also grow very large.
I’m already thinking about where we could plant it. Not only large, they also lose their leaves in autumn/winter and produce a lot of litter. They do look nice, though.
Our neighbors have one about 2-3 meters (7-10 feet) from our fence. Now it provides nice shade for our tomatoes and also serves as a kind of privacy screen. However, we’re still glad it’s not on our property.

WilderSueden17 Jul 2023 11:23Is it allowed to plant them so close to the property line where you are? Here in Baden-Württemberg, a walnut tree would require an 8m (26 feet) setback from the boundary. That alone basically makes large trees impossible. Yet, the development plan still lists them all in Planting List 1...

Is it allowed to plant them so close to each other where you are? I suspect it’s a case of "grandfathering." They’ve been there for several years, and the previous owner didn’t care. It was just a "wild garden" before our time.
The current owners have already considered removing them. We don’t mind them, and they are regularly pruned back each autumn.
If needed, I also help our neighbor with it. 😎
