I’m attaching a photo in which you can at least partly see the hedge that borders our future property on the right and left sides.
We find it visually quite heavy and it’s not 100% well maintained. We think that trimming it will require a lot of work.
This hedge “forest” doesn’t appeal to us visually. We also find it unsuitable regarding burglary protection (someone could move around in this dense thicket without being noticed) and would prefer to have a fence for safety reasons, especially because of the children.
However, several people with more gardening experience have told us that removing this hedge will be a major task. It’s still unclear to us, so we need to ask again: The hedge apparently extends beyond our property, and the neighbor also has a share of the hedge.
Setting that aside for now: Is there any chance to remove this hedge as a DIY project? We understand it will probably be exhausting, but is it doable? What tools would be needed? Or is it better to leave it to a professional? What do you estimate the cost for hedge removal by a specialist would be?

As for cutting it down to 20cm (8 inches) high, as suggested here, I would not recommend that. Instead, leave as much of the trunk standing as possible to have a nice long lever arm.

... you can also shorten the hedge and add a fence – I wouldn’t remove it entirely, because that either involves extremely hard work and expensive disposal, or you hire someone and it becomes very costly.
I don’t quite understand why you want a fence on top of the planting stones ‘because of the children.’ The children are much more at risk climbing on the planting stones, but in my opinion, that should be handled through education rather than restrictive measures. To assess how realistic your concerns about burglars are, I would consult with the local police advisory service.

In our district, the disposal of a car trailer full of green waste costs 5 euros. This refers to a car trailer. We usually bring 3m³ (3.9 cubic yards). In the summer, I made 9 trips with a van including the trailer. So that was almost 50 cubic meters (65.4 cubic yards). In total, it cost 90 euros.
Above the hedge is our actual garden. The hedge marks the edge of the garden, where there is then a steep drop down to the basement level. In the basement, there is a separate apartment. My concern is that the children might crawl through the hedge while playing hide and seek with other kids and then accidentally fall down the slope. That’s why we want a fence, so that you don’t suddenly find yourself at the edge of a drop.
Fence: I have no idea what kind of fence it should be. I think we need to make sure it doesn’t get too expensive. The main purpose is to protect the children from falling.
