I thought a garden chat and photo thread would be a good idea.
This way, we have a space to share current pictures and discuss dandelions and other plants.

Isn't it good? Right? That's exactly what you want: a dense hedge within a few years. Birds and hedgehogs should also feel comfortable in it.

Birds in bamboo? Never seen that!

From a bird’s perspective, this could just as well be about bamboo... :p

I don’t have first-hand experience with bamboo hedges in Germany, but the birds in Queensland, Western Australia, near my father’s old house, loved bamboo and always used it to tease the cat...

Queensland is naturally located in eastern Australia, sorry...

No, for native wildlife, we plant native species like bottlebrush in the west. Bamboo is not very popular in the west, as we don’t get enough rainfall. It requires too much maintenance.

Bamboo at my brother’s place, the kind that spreads aggressively. Although he installed root barriers in the ground, I was still shocked when I saw these pictures. He cuts it back about 1.5m (5 feet) each year down to the top of the fence and thins it out every 3-4 years. Seven plants over 6m (20 feet), planted in 2011; these photos are from this year.

Why were you shocked? That looks like a great hedge.

Here is another bamboo hedge: we bought the plants from a classified ad for a low price three years ago. It is now just under 2m (6.5 feet) tall and is allowed to grow as high as it wants.
