I thought a garden chat and photo thread would be a good idea.
This way, we have a space to share current pictures and discuss dandelions and other plants.

Wood chips work quite well for perennials. Many plants do not like bark mulch at all.

I find straw the best option in vegetable beds. I don’t share the experience of @Myrna_Loy. I sometimes have 15-20 cm (6-8 inches) of it under tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and zucchini. Grass clippings need to be added repeatedly to form a thick, dry layer. Always apply about 2-3 cm (1 inch) and then add more after one or two weeks. This usually works well in normal years; this year I didn’t have any grass clippings. If you put too much on at once, it becomes slimy and smelly. That’s also why you shouldn’t put fresh grass clippings straight into the compost.

I applied pine mulch in my two flower beds based on the recommendation from the local supplier. It made quite a difference. There is much less water demand (evaporation), and I also think it looks better. The only downside is that some annoying birds sometimes pull out the mulch, so I have to sweep it back in place. The layer is still a bit thin, so I probably need to buy 3 or 4 more bags of 70 liters (18.5 gallons) each.

Weeds are also much easier to remove; while in bare soil they are stuck fast, under the mulch they just pull out easily.
And tomatoes and strawberries close to the ground don’t rot as quickly.

However, for larger beds, this can get quite expensive 🤨

For some reason, I don’t like bark mulch. Has anyone had experience with wood chips?

I don’t like bark mulch either. I also know why: if weeds do manage to grow through it, they’re hard to pull out. You have to painstakingly dig them out.
In my view, perennial beds don’t really need mulch either, since there is little space between the plants after they have been established for 2 to 3 years. I also wouldn’t like the look of it.

I’m not a big fan of bark mulch either. Sometimes it’s just practical and affordable.

Blackbirds love bark mulch and similar materials. And yes, they can make a mess with it.

No thanks, that was the one where the man works at Merck.
But who cares about that nowadays.

...and how exactly does that relate to an educational film on evidence-based science? Apparently only you know.
It's a pity that the immediate response to presenting facts is always whataboutism.

Well, once someone lies, they are unfortunately not believed... even when they are telling the truth.
