ᐅ LAYING A LAWN – KILL WEEDS BEFOREHAND!?

Hello.
We have recently built a new house, and now we are working on the garden. The lawn area is about 400m² (4,300 sq ft).

The plot used to be a meadow; the topsoil was present and has been spread out.

Now various weeds are growing...

What is the proper way to proceed? How can I remove the weeds before laying the lawn? Please keep in mind the large area...

I would be very grateful for detailed tips and tools!

Thank you! Good luck

I first mowed nearly 1,300 m² (14,000 sq ft) of area at the lowest mower setting (the weeds), then used a borrowed rototiller to dig everything up. After that, as usual, rake smooth and reseed.

Exactly like that! A professional landscaper wouldn’t do it any other way. However, the rototiller shouldn’t be a toy but a proper adult machine! Otherwise, you’ll be thinking about this task forever.

Hello Krischaaan

How does the farmer do it? Spray Round Up, wait a week, then plow and sow.

This method also involves digging over the soil. He won’t avoid that, but he categorically rules it out for the larger 400–500m² (4,300–5,400 ft²) areas.

If digging over the soil is too exhausting, you could hire a landscaping contractor.
How long does digging over usually take? I have a similar area, unfortunately with clayey soil, already tilled, and I’m currently letting a green manure cover crop grow. It’s like weeds and will need to be dug over as well...

Hello M4rvin

Turning the soil is not the problem. Removing the weeds is the challenging part. Simply turning the soil does not solve this.

Go ahead! And set up a sandbox there for the kids as well....
