I thought a garden chat and photo thread would be a good idea.
This way, we have a space to share current pictures and discuss dandelions and other plants.

Here is our hornbeam hedge in autumn – I really love it at the moment 🙂

We planted one last spring...
Can you give me some advice on how to prune it? I find so many different opinions online... Should I cut the top to encourage growth at the bottom or not?
Should I prune a bit all over to encourage better growth? I’m a bit confused.

So far, it has established well, but it hasn’t really gained much height yet, and it doesn’t seem to be getting denser either.

Last year, we did cut a bit off the top of some plants, and they then pushed new shoots from the top, but somehow it doesn’t look nice or dense.

When it was smaller, did you put a stake on each trunk to keep it straight? Or is that necessary?

Probably planted too far apart. 4-5 per meter (3 feet).
How old? How tall when purchased? Photo, otherwise it’s hard to say or guess.

The best advice is patience. Let the hedge grow older and it will become denser. Over the 18 years with our hornbeam hedge in our terraced garden, we observed this very clearly. We pruned it only lightly at first and mostly let it grow. The shoots that grew in the wrong direction we "disciplined." By the fourth year, the hedge looked beautiful.

How long does it take to grow that big? We would like to plant a hedge next to a wire fence and that one looks really nice.

I missed that. Show me, ours only appeared in the third year.
