I thought a garden chat and photo thread would be a good idea.
This way, we have a space to share current pictures and discuss dandelions and other plants.

So far, I have gone with evergreen plants because I want privacy even in winter. I didn’t know there was something like hornbeam.

Just don’t get confused!! Hornbeam (which is actually a birch relative) leafs out earlier in spring – but it loses its leaves in winter!
Beech (also shown in the photos by @Snowy36) keeps its leaves until the following spring! However, it starts leafing a bit later than hornbeam!
Beech leaves have smooth edges, while hornbeam leaves are serrated.
Make sure to research carefully beforehand. You don’t want to be disappointed later!

That is not correct. Hornbeam, the one with the corrugated leaves, does not lose its leaves before new buds appear; instead, it sheds the old leaves afterwards.

It's about leaves. They blow around everywhere and also spread onto neighboring properties. Of course, I want to collect them before anyone complains.

Leaves can blow away. I also have unknown leaves on my property. That’s nature, and that’s allowed. Trash is removed by hand.

The leaves of the beech have smooth edges, while the hornbeam leaves are serrated.

Now you are confusing me. Do I have beech? The foliage dries out and stays on until spring..

Glove to help get a better grip on some growths

You are very wise! Somehow, I always have freshly painted fingernails just before I start poking around in the gravel – of course without gloves 🙄

🙄 I don’t understand that sentence.
@ypg You can find a good explanation on g...gle if you look up the differences between hornbeam and beech.

I’m fairly certain it’s beech if the dried leaves stay on through the winter until spring and then fall off together with the new growth (although I always see what looks like a hornbeam here, which keeps its leaves a bit longer but eventually looks quite bare).

When buying hedges, keep this in mind:
Look for beech,
Hornbeam is not my choice.
Think of red, think of rust,
Then even in frost,
uh, I mean cold,
Leaves stay on half the branches.
And in springtime,
That’s when the blower comes.
Because with good momentum
And quality fertilizer,
The new growth appears,
Which everyone loves!
