I thought a garden chat and photo thread would be a good idea.
This way, we have a space to share current pictures and discuss dandelions and other plants.

I didn't pay anything at Globus, not even starting from 50€ (about 55 USD). I thought that was incredible too, but they really try to retain and serve their customers. You have to check. Our regular recycling center, which also supplies bulk sand, soil, and similar materials, delivers as usual without any issues.

First it was the lateral thinkers, then the mulled wine drinkers, now it’s people who want to get fresh air with their children.
That’s a funny distortion of “lateral thinking.” Truly thinking laterally, meaning being open to all outcomes, is great in itself, but unfortunately it’s equated with spouting “stupid pub talk slogans” loudly. It’s a shame for the originally good term. Same with “mulled wine drinking”—I enjoy that sometimes too. I look out my window directly at a popular excursion spot. Last year it was usually empty; since Corona, it’s often overcrowded. When a doctor recommends more hiking, hardly anyone moves; but as soon as there’s a regulation, people run around frantically, especially in groups, because that seems more revolutionary—they really want to show off. Strictly following the motto: I’ll just do the opposite. Everybody understands “getting fresh air with children,” though oddly in non-Corona times it often seems less important—but then it’s boring because it’s allowed.

Just accept that you can’t control everything, and make less fuss.
I know few countries where so little is controlled as here. Maybe you should get out of the Odenwald to realize that 😀 …and I’m glad it is that way here. So please don’t “think laterally” and present it as if everything here was controlled… You say “make less fuss”… so should I just wait or tolerate some fool passing on a disease to me or an innocent loved one? You call being sick or fearing sickness “making a fuss,” and children or families being restricted from going everywhere for a limited time are oppressed or excessively controlled? Sorry, but calling that “making a fuss” sounds painfully inappropriate.

The problem is that people who normally spend their free time washing cars, going to indoor play centers, having coffee gatherings at Aunt Erna’s, etc., are now forced to go out into nature.
“Forced into nature” — I really like that. I thought they are now taking their cherished right to enjoy nature, but apparently that’s forced as well. Most grandmas complained about too little visitors even before Corona. Help—it’s Corona and I have to go to the forest against my will… Help, Google, I can’t find it… And who’s going to wash my car then? Oh dear, that’s seriously twisted—or is that what you’d call “lateral”? What were “indoor play centers” called before? Oh right, there were only unhappy children anyway….
apokolok schrieb:

They just don’t know their way around; they just google ‘excursion destination something’ or they remember something from their childhood. So everyone ends up at the same parking lots.
Stop—flaw in logic: if these families already went to their beloved forests and nature before Corona restrictions, then aren’t they benefiting from their knowledge now? Wouldn’t Google rather disturb that? So they have not been in the forest or nature since childhood? Really—and now it’s Google’s fault or the Corona regulations? Hmm… maybe they weren’t in nature before or only rarely and are just now panicking as so-called lateral thinkers? If they’d always been in nature, they’d know it, end of story!

By the way, I come right from the Odenwald, was practically born in the forest, and have lived in various parts of Germany. Usually, I would really have to try hard not to find a forest or open space. Yet people meet at “hot spots,” and there is surely some Prosecco too. Sorry, I couldn’t find the forest because Google said nothing, so I ended up at the hotspot. 🤨 If people were as creative in finding hiking trails as they are in making strange excuses, there wouldn’t be so-called hotspots.
apokolok schrieb:

There’s enough room for social distancing even in a crowded parking lot; no one catches anything just passing by.
True, it’s that simple… I forgot. Without rules, everything would work great, and without enforcement even perfectly. Yep.
apokolok schrieb:

You just put up some wardens, signposts properly.
Oh yes… these are just “little plastic men” you put up… I know those, you just place them and they do whatever I like best. Convenient. They have no life or family anyway. Are you aware how many people have to work unnecessarily every day and expose themselves to ridiculous risks because idiots behave like idiots and call it their right (even before Corona)? Every one of those wardens would rather be at home with their children on Sunday, but because others insist on their “right to always and everything” against existing rules, these people have to do these stupid jobs. Sorry… you just put some dumb figures there… and poof… my own important life is how I like it; that’s enough.
apokolok schrieb:

That doesn’t need comments about 'irresponsible recklessness' and other rubbish. It is the right of already heavily restricted people to go to a nice spot of their choice.
Oh… so some restrictions do apply; in this case the right to comment on it… now that’s what I call “lateral thinking.” You call commenting on unlawful behavior “rubbish” and say “no comments needed,” while breaking rules is “my right.” Where exactly is this “good right to go anywhere you want to a nice spot” stated? If you refer to the Basic Law, please also read about exceptions and restrictions. By the way, even the dentist’s office has restrictions: do all patients go into the treatment room at the same time? Even in the queue at the mulled wine stand, people voluntarily follow rules… funny… maybe society just needs more mulled wine, that could also be a solution… best in the forest, but after Corona back indoors at the shopping mall, because the forest is actually terrible and I just get lost without Google or missing “childhood memories.” 🤨

No nursing home resident dies because people are stuck in traffic somewhere in the Black Forest; that has other causes.
That comparison is downright cynical, but at the same time reassuring that you apparently know the solution the world is looking for. You should urgently offer your model there so it can finally be implemented. Always those amateur scientists….
apokolok schrieb:

We have completely lost all sense of proportion and there is only blind activism without even pursuing the original goal of reducing infections. Desperate bans and accusations, none of it helps.
“Sense of proportion” is always your own standard. I myself get frustrated, view measures critically, and would prefer if politicians had listened better to our excellent science. Nearly all scenarios were anticipated in some form; some even mathematically predicted. Yet it’s no use to just throw everything away now. I ask chronic complainers, “Where in the world is the right solution?” Everyone stumbles, fails, adapts, makes mistakes… I am highly critical of politics but ask: where should we go now to get it right? I’ve often been told: Sweden. Haha… I speak weekly with Sweden; they’d gladly come to Germany… or just ask the Swedish king’s opinion. Nobody likes the current situation; I’ve lost so much myself. There is no easy solution, so I follow the rules diligently, meet only carefully with my own children, and it hurts. Meanwhile, I observe people who don’t stop whining and selfishly bulldoze through life, and I get annoyed… but who cares?

We don’t have Globus in our area. It’s about 70 km (43 miles) away. An acquaintance orders a lot from Globus and picks up the items themselves. They have pickup lockers spread out across the parking lots. Hellweg, Obi, and Baywa are the closest stores. Before the pandemic, some of them charged quite a lot for shipping.

That’s correct. But, for example, Obi now offers free home delivery on orders over €100 (about $110) within a 50 km (31 miles) radius, I believe. You really have to check what they currently offer.

Lol @pagoni2020, you really put a lot of effort into twisting my words. However, your rant doesn’t deserve a response. I would also like to politely point out that I have no connection to the movement known as "Querdenker."

Back to the garden, I spent almost an hour today dressed warmly, attending a video conference in the sun at around -2°C (28°F). It was better than I expected, although my feet got cold towards the end.

I also noticed that parts of my lawn have quite a bit of moss. Does anyone have a home remedy for this, and when is the best time to address it?
