Hello everyone!

As some users have requested before, I’m now starting a new thread with the current planning of our detached house, which is about to be finalized.

These are the preliminary drawings for the building permit / planning permission application, and I have one last chance to review them and point out any issues.

It still seems to me that there is less than 1.20m (4 feet) of space between the two wardrobes in the dressing room. Or am I seeing this wrong? Apparently, the rooms on the left and right were overlooked and not adjusted accordingly.

Two Velux ceiling spotlights are still planned to illuminate the upper floor hallway.

In the basement, on the right side in the upper room, a window similar to the one on the left basement side is an option.

We still haven’t decided on the T30 fire-rated door to the garage, even though it is shown in the plans. Most likely, for safety reasons and the limited use of the kitchen at the other end of the house, we will eventually forgo it.

User 11ant pointed out that the right window in child’s room 2 is suboptimally positioned. However, this could still be changed after submitting the building permit / planning permission application. Our architect thinks moving the window to the left would negatively affect the house’s exterior appearance. We’ll have to see about that.

It’s just a shame. We wanted a good start and to do everything right. But what the other neighbors say suggests it’s not primarily my fault.

However, being committed to good neighborly relations and being taken advantage of are two different things.

I think he is upset about something that has little or nothing to do with the currently apparent circumstances or facts.

I believe the frustration comes from what is happening to the right and left of his property when he compares those to his own. This is how the situation looks. In the background, you can see the other new building I mentioned. I could imagine that envy or resentment might play a role here. Suddenly, there are two new owners who have built stylish houses or even villas on either side, and he can’t keep up. One has a star displayed in front of the garage, the other always arrives in blue and white. From what I understand, he usually takes the commuter train. Personally, I wouldn’t have a problem if there was a villa with a pool next door, or a neighbor with a sports car or whatever. But there are certainly people who have issues with that. I think it’s unfortunate. But I can’t change it.

I like people who commute by S-Bahn [emoji4], and I really think the older house is quite pretty. To me, what you just said sounds like a rather snobbish prejudice.

That was not my intention. I simply couldn’t think of any other reasonable explanation in relation to 11ants’ statement that there must be a deeper reason. And since the neighbors of the other new build voiced this assumption, as they had more or less the same experiences, I thought it might actually be true.

I really don’t care how someone gets around. I was just looking for an explanation. And by mentioning the Ferrari, I also wanted to show that there are still people who can afford a bit more. For some that doesn’t matter, for others it does. Whether that is ultimately the correct reason, of course, I don’t know. It could be irrelevant to all of us unless someone finds a reason that can be dispelled.

I apologize again if that came across as arrogant. That was truly not my intention.

Well, my opinion on why he is definitely upset is mentioned above, although only indirectly.

I have already pointed out that although direct neighbors don’t necessarily have to be friends, the immediate neighborhood is generally seen as a more private environment. In such a setting, a casual attitude tends to be more appreciated than a strictly formal one. The latter is often perceived as snobbish.

From reading the latest posts, it seems to me that you haven’t adjusted your behavior in an area where people more or less accept each other as neighbors and live side by side. You also haven’t initially taken a more defensive or subordinate stance. It sounds awkward and looks worse in writing, but insisting strictly on one’s rights does not usually go down well.

And even if you believe you don’t need to be friendly toward a neighbor (even if they are the biggest jerk in the world…), this approach will still be reciprocated. It’s possible to get along well with a difficult person without being submissive.

This is rarely about envy. Usually, the behavior of the younger generation can seem a bit unsettling—especially when they are well-off.

I know you have a different opinion, but you might want to think about it [emoji6]
