ᐅ Installing a kitchen sink in the corner?

Hello everyone,

I’ve been a long-time IKEA fan but I’m new to the forum. I’m currently moving and planning my first kitchen. Naturally, I would prefer one from IKEA. However, I have realized that there doesn’t seem to be a solution for my problem. I’ll try to explain briefly.

I really don’t have much space for the kitchen. The longer side is 206cm (81 inches) and the shorter side is 140cm (55 inches). The connections for the sink are on the longer side in the corner. The problem is that the stove connections are on the very end of the shorter side. So basically, I end up hitting my back on the edge of the stove when I’m standing in the narrow gap at the sink (an architectural masterpiece!).

My idea: a 90x90cm (35x35 inches) corner solution with a corner base cabinet and a matching worktop for the sink. Then, directly attached in an L-shape, a 50cm (20 inches) wide free-standing stove. So not a corner with two 60cm (24 inches) deep countertops coming to a point, but a 90x90cm (35x35 inches) worktop with a straight “standing area” at the front (specifically for corner base cabinets with sinks). That might just work! On the long side, there would still be space for the fridge (50cm/20 inches wide) and a dishwasher (45cm/18 inches wide).

However, I haven’t found any 90x90cm (35x35 inches) corner base cabinets at IKEA, nor any option to order a matching worktop cut to size. Did I miss something? Other IKEA-compatible solutions for this issue would also be welcome!

Thank you very much!

Is there a window? (Height of the bottom edge?)
Does the fourth wall connect directly to the doors?
Are there any appliances besides the dishwasher?
Can the dishwasher be stored in the basement or attic?
About 80 cm (31 inches) in front of the stove is not much space, but do you want to move around while cooking?
Should it be a standalone refrigerator?
Do you cook large turkeys, or is a 45 cm (18 inches) high oven sufficient?
For cooking, you need pots and pans. Your plan doesn’t seem to include space for them.

P.S. With the camera, you should be able to set macro/close-up mode; then you can take clear photos of nearby objects.

Hello Robi,

I really like your design! It would solve all the problems at once! I’m just not familiar with the connections needed for a kitchen. If the wiring and everything works out, that could be a great option!

Hello IKEA expert,

Well – the fourth wall does not connect directly to the doors. There is a built-in seating area right next to it. I could remove that. But if I put kitchen appliances there, there wouldn’t be any dining space left. The window is just behind the seating area. The rest of the apartment is not very big either.

Unfortunately, there is no basement or attic. Only a small storage niche for some sports equipment.

Do you think 80cm (31 inches) in front of the stove would be enough? I do move around the apartment a lot, but it wouldn't have to be while cooking.

The fridge should have a freezer compartment. But a small one in an under-counter fridge would be sufficient. Somewhere to store the "emergency pizza" is necessary.

I don’t cook turkeys. But I like baking a lot – making cakes or sometimes a sheet of pizza for guests should be possible. Are there small ovens like that? I need to check!

For pots and pans (and glasses and so on), I was thinking of putting a shallow wooden shelf on the wall opposite the stove (assuming the fridge won’t be there). I already have a shelf like that and it holds lots of pots and dishes (the downside is that items you don’t use often need dusting from time to time).

By the way, the photo is NOT my design. That’s how the kitchen looks right now – with very old, ugly cabinets. I’ve agreed to renovate it when I move in. It’s just not acceptable as it is now!

And yes, that’s true! The camera has such a setting. I rarely use it and didn’t even think about it.

Many thanks to everyone here for the ideas and help!!!

Here is another layout I’m not satisfied with yet, and there are still some issues to resolve:

Is there no space for a dining area in the living room?

Hello IKEA expert,

Thank you very much for this idea!

It also gave me the idea to maybe build around the corner after all – but without a corner cabinet, more like a “dead corner” (only using the countertop above as a storage surface) and placing the refrigerator where the stove is now...

Regarding your question: Unfortunately, there is no separate living room. There is only a combined living and bedroom of about 16m² (170 sq ft). If I squeeze the dining area in there, I would basically be eating in the bedroom right next to the bed.

Hello,
what would be the advantage of the dead corner? There would then be no base cabinet at all.

Well, I thought I would at least have some storage space on the countertop in the corner, and it would save about 30 cm (12 inches) along the longer wall compared to a corner base cabinet. But it’s still not ideal.

To be honest, I’m starting to reconsider. Maybe it won’t be Ikea after all. I found another manufacturer that offers 80 x 80 cm (31½ x 31½ inches) corner base cabinets. That would fit! Although it’s a shame, because I was really interested in a beautiful solid wood countertop, and the other manufacturer doesn’t offer those at all. Maybe I’ll just get the cabinets there and put a DIY countertop from a hardware store on top. It’s really unfortunate, but what good are the cabinets if they don’t fit?
