Bought a house, estimated the renovation budget plus 10-15% for inevitable extras, and we set aside 5000 EUR for the kitchen!!!!

That’s how it started... at first, I was in a bit of shock, but we still had time. First step: remove all the walls for a new layout—I need space...

Let’s start with the (according to the agent) move-in ready property. The small kitchen, just under 8 square meters (about 86 square feet), had its 1970s pass-through removed. The wall including the kitchen door is gone! The wall next to the cellar stairs is gone too! Actually, the entire slanted wall, nearly 7 meters (23 feet) high, removed completely...

The window had to go as well since we needed a different working height than the standard 90 cm (35 inches). New screed installed, we switched to underfloor heating, all electrical wiring and water pipes are new.

After almost six months, the realization slowly sank in: the kitchen budget will not exceed 5000 EUR, so we had to look for a used kitchen... something special, but very cheap.

The search criteria: within a 100 km (62 miles) radius, up to 1000 EUR, because I still want new appliances.

I don’t understand why the dishwasher was raised like that – it doesn’t make loading any more comfortable, but you lose valuable, bright countertop space around the sink area. Also, the oven height seems a bit unusual. Or is the kitchen meant to be wheelchair accessible?

I wanted the dishwasher to be installed at this height to make loading easier and to store all dishwasher utensils in the compartment underneath.

Above that, I plan to place my Echo Show.

This is the height we chose for the oven.

Most ovens installed higher up either start at countertop height or one compartment lower, and are usually too high for us.

We tested this setup in several kitchen showrooms and at friends’ houses and didn’t like it.

We decided to go with a slightly lower height because we find it easier to reach.

Additionally, there is a compartment above where the microwave is installed with an upward extension. If the oven had been placed higher, the microwave would have been too high for me.

I find both the height for the dishwasher and the oven acceptable. However, what I definitely did not want was a dishwasher placed directly against the wall. I can guarantee that after no more than two months, there will be various coffee, tea, and tomato sauce stains on the wall that inevitably occur while loading and unloading.

Before the dishwasher is installed, consider adding something to protect the wall. There are nice options using materials similar to kitchen splashbacks, but extending from the floor all the way up, with a color-matched design (a picture, graphic pattern, or similar).

Otherwise, you will end up having to clean the wall every month.

I thought “stable” was the current trend 🤨

Yes, but I get the feeling it’s even more so with younger children. For example, my 9-year-old says stable.

We also have the height of the dishwasher. It’s great.
There really should be a splash guard on the wall. The second coffee cup leaves its marks.
The oven would be too low for me.

Do you have a bayonet lock on the faucet?

I like the lamp.
