ᐅ First step toward the new open-plan kitchen! Is this design feasible?

Good morning,

we have now reached the point where we need to think about the kitchen in our new build.
The current plan looks like this:

2D kitchen floor plan with sink, stove, and base cabinets in L-shape

It was very important to us that the oven/microwave and dishwasher are not located at floor level.
We have not yet decided whether to install a downdraft extractor or a slanted hood. However, due to the ventilation system, we need an automatic extraction duct to the exterior wall, similar to a Flow Star 150.

The initial quote shocked us a bit. After some calculations, the kitchen planner came up with 12,000 euros (without appliances) for a Nobilia kitchen with good gloss fronts and mid-range drawers.

3D floor plan of an interior: white kitchen unit, red floor, white furniture structures

Since the space is quite limited, would you do anything differently?
Any tips or comments?
How do you assess the price in relation to the kitchen?
Since the manufacturer uses standard sizes, would you prefer to buy from a large furniture store or from a smaller kitchen studio?

Thank you for your help!

We currently have them, but you can also do without them entirely. In my opinion, they are not a useful invention, as most of the condensate and odor remain in the room.

Current new build without a controlled ventilation system? Or how do you plan to handle the exhaust then?

How high should the dishwasher be? Is 30cm (12 inches) enough? 20-30cm (8-12 inches) clearance from the floor + 90cm (36 inches) for the dishwasher + 50cm (20 inches) for the oven.

The heat from the oven does not affect the refrigerator at all; both are well insulated, so the heat or cold stays contained.

Not necessarily. There are powerful ones with carbon filters. Not comparable to the cheap basic recirculation hoods.

That may well be true that those are improving. But there is no comparison to a good external exhaust system.

The heat from the oven doesn’t affect the fridge at all; both are so well insulated that the heat or cold stays inside.

We will have a mechanical ventilation system, as described earlier in the first thread. A FlowStar150 wall cassette vent will be installed in the external wall. It will be controlled either by pressure differential from the exhaust system or electrically.

The dishwasher should be raised about 40–50cm (16–20 inches) to allow convenient access.

I find the heat from the oven quite strong. We currently also have a Nobili kitchen from 2013, and the Bosch oven emits a significant amount of heat.

A reasonable request. Therefore, I would try to place these appliances along a wall rather than facing into the room. Reasons: The kitchen will look very cramped, the dishwasher noise will bother you because in that position it is simply louder and directed towards the room. Unfortunately, I don’t have a better creative idea—however, I wouldn’t choose the kitchen like this. A professional should take another look.

Whether we choose a downdraft extractor or a slanted hood...

A downdraft extractor is sleek and saves some space in the base cabinet; the ducts can be routed under the cabinets. With an 80cm (31.5 inch) width and a downdraft extractor, the cooking area is noticeably smaller compared to an overhead or slanted hood.

How do you rate the price in relation to the kitchen?

There is still some room to negotiate—which becomes clear once the offer includes the appliances. Unfortunately, this market is quite confusing. Significant discounts are possible in some cases, making list prices almost meaningless. Still, don’t buy based on discounts alone but consider your own balance of price and performance.

Since the manufacturer follows standards, would you rather go to a large furniture store or a small kitchen showroom?

The important thing is that the kitchen planner listens to your wishes and adapts accordingly. There are also furniture stores with good staff. We received excellent advice at the Knuffmann furniture store in Neuss and made our purchase there. Without my wife pushing me, I probably wouldn’t have gone there myself (thanks to her). We also visited several kitchen studios where planners ignored our requests, saying "that’s not how it’s done nowadays." By the way, the process was highly professional, and the installation was carried out by two in-house carpenters who worked meticulously and in a good mood.

First of all, thanks for your input.
We had the same idea, but then the available workspace becomes very limited. Since the dishwasher needs to be close to the sink’s water connection, there is hardly any room to "prepare" anything if the entire wall is filled with tall cabinets.
