ᐅ IKEA Godmorgon Cabinet – How to Combine and Secure It?

Hello everyone,

we purchased the wall cabinet Godmorgon from IKEA as well as a countertop (which is 1.36m (4 ft 6 in) long), into which our built-in washbasin will be installed later. Our wall is made of hollow brick Unipor and has a thickness of 17.5cm (7 inches) in the installation area in the rough construction stage, plus plaster.

Now, like many others, I am wondering:
  • Which screws and wall plugs (anchors) do I need to securely mount the Godmorgon cabinet to the wall?
  • Once the countertop with the built-in washbasin is installed on top, should it be additionally supported with brackets (heavy-duty brackets)? If so, which kind?
We just want to make sure that if the children lean on or even sit on the countertop, everything will hold securely.

I really appreciate any tips or experiences you can share.

We have the 120cm (47 inches) one, the washbasin is 125cm (49 inches).

It’s best to carefully consider how the unit will actually be installed and how everything fits together.
We had a real mess with the trap and the reinforcing bar on the back, which unfortunately is exactly where the water connections and drain are located.

Do you want to wall-mount the furniture and avoid using legs entirely?

Hello Stefan,

We would like to wall-mount the furniture and do without legs.

I already suspected that the installation wouldn’t be straightforward. The “specification” for the two traps naturally comes from the plumbing plan (distance between the two basins). We have already marked this on site.

Is there anything I can still change on site now that would make things easier for me later?

I find the prices simply unbeatable... I think it serves its purpose well!
Yes, there's not much to do about the price. For us, just over 2.4 meters (8 feet) of solid wood panel for under 500€. The general contractor wanted to charge us 800€ for a base cabinet without a countertop or anything similar. And the quality wouldn’t have been any different either.

@exto1791 Take a look at 40mm (1.6 inches) plywood panels, for example in birch or maple. We have used these again here and really like them; they can be oiled in any color you prefer. You can get them from a lumber supplier as sheet goods, and have the pieces cut to the sizes you need.
Depending on the situation, I would also consider adding a stylish steel skid on one side, which costs around €50-70.
In my opinion, that looks nice and makes assembly much easier. You can then, for example, simply screw the morning greeting onto the panel; we did exactly that 3 days ago, very easy.
For this, you need a space-saving siphon, which you can find at a DIY store or your heating specialist.
Ikea sinks apparently have different drain dimensions and don’t look quite as neat, so we don’t use Ikea sinks, which also allows this push-button drain to fit properly.

May I ask where you all got your countertops from and which material you chose?

Are there also wood-look materials suitable for bathrooms?

Getting a countertop from a home improvement store and having it cut to size?

My oak board comes from a specialized timber supplier. However, you can also buy glued laminated timber boards from a hardware store. The bigger issue is usually the surface. I have sanded mine several times and treated it with Osmo Topoil. Water should not be allowed to stand on it, otherwise water stains will appear. You could also use varnish, but this is more difficult to apply, and if the varnish is damaged and water seeps in, it becomes a bigger problem. With oiled surfaces, you can also do partial repairs.

There are online stores that offer great countertops custom-cut with high-quality and durable CPL, often at lower prices than hardware stores. They also usually have a wider selection of patterns. Just try searching online.
