peo-toHello everyone, I am planning to get an Ikea Metod kitchen and have now reached the stage of choosing countertops. Since Metod countertops are often made of coated wood-based materials, I wonder what specific protection I should consider during use to ensure they last as long as possible. What care instructions are useful? Are there any special treatments or protective measures I need to apply to the surface to minimize damage from water, heat, or scratches? I would appreciate tips based on experience or expert knowledge!
I’ll address this in more detail, as Ikea Metod panels usually involve either melamine-coated or laminate countertops:
- Water: Make sure that especially the edges always stay dry, as this is where the bond between the engineered wood and the coating is most vulnerable. Standing water can cause swelling.
- Heat: Direct heat from hot pots or pans can quickly damage the surface. Always use trivets or oven mitts.
- Scratches: Use cutting boards. Cutting directly on the countertop leaves unsightly scratches that cannot be repaired.
- Cleaning: Avoid harsh cleaning agents and abrasive sponges. A soft cloth with mild dish soap is sufficient.
Summary: Protection mainly involves mechanical (cutting boards), thermal (oven mitts), and moisture protection at the edges.
