Hello everyone, I have a specific issue with my IKEA Metod countertops. After some use, several small scratches have appeared that are quite visible. Since the surface is rather matte, these scratches stand out and bother me a lot.
I don’t want to replace the entire countertop right away, as that is quite expensive and complicated. Are there any proven methods or products to remove these scratches or at least significantly reduce their appearance? I am especially interested in techniques that work with this particular plastic surface without causing further damage.
Tips on how to prevent new scratches would also be great. Looking forward to your experiences and advice!

Hello Bikejan,
IKEA Metod countertops are usually made of wood-based materials with a plastic laminate surface. Scratches cannot be simply treated with sandpaper, as this would damage the surface.
I recommend the following approach:
- Use a special plastic polish kit, which you can find at hardware stores.
- Minor scratches can sometimes be gently repaired with a bit of car polish or a fine abrasive pad.
- Always apply a protective sealing for plastics afterwards to protect the surface.
For prevention: use coasters and cutting boards, and avoid placing sharp or metallic objects directly on the countertop.

Scratches are definitely annoying! 😅 But keep in mind: this laminate surface isn’t designed for heavy-duty use. Think of the board as a sensitive diva – with a little care, it will forgive you.
So, apply some polish and better leave the sharp knife moves to somewhere else. Cutting boards are your friends, guaranteed!

I don’t want to turn a matte surface into an unwanted glossy spot. Are there products that preserve the matte finish without changing it?
Also, I’m interested in how often such a treatment should ideally be done to maintain the protection long-term.

Here is a brief guide on how to deal with scratches on Metod countertops:
1. Cleaning: Clean the surface thoroughly with a mild detergent and dry it well.
2. Treating minor scratches: Use a very fine abrasive pad (e.g., grit 1000 or finer). Gently polish in the direction of the grain of the countertop.
3. Polishing: Use a plastic polish designed specifically for matte finishes – if it contains no waxes, the surface will remain matte.
4. Protection: Finally, apply a protective coating for plastic that keeps the matte appearance.
Important: Always test each step first on an inconspicuous area to check the effect.
Frequency: Depending on use and wear, I recommend treating the surface every 6-12 months to prevent scratches and preserve the finish.
If scratches are too deep, usually replacement of the affected section is the only solution.
