Hello everyone, I bought an Ikea Metod kitchen countertop and have now noticed minor signs of wear such as scratches and unevenness on the surface. My question is: How can I sand an Ikea Metod countertop myself without damaging the surface? Are there any specific sanding methods or tools you would recommend? I’m generally thinking of starting with fine sandpaper, but I’m unsure how much material can be removed safely and how to treat the surface afterward to make it durable and visually appealing again. I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello puiuno, to answer your question properly, it is important to first know the exact material of your Ikea Metod countertop. Usually, it consists of melamine resin-coated particleboard or engineered wood panels with a plastic surface. This is important when sanding because, unlike solid wood, you cannot simply sand it down.

In general:
- Start with very fine sandpaper, for example, grit 320 or finer, to gently reduce light scratches or dull spots.
- Wet sanding is recommended to bind the dust and avoid further damaging the surface.
- Always apply light pressure and work in movements that follow the grain or structure of the material (countertops usually have a smooth and uniform surface).

After sanding, you should treat the surface with an appropriate maintenance oil or wax that is suitable for melamine resin-coated surfaces; otherwise, the countertop may quickly become unattractive or susceptible to moisture.

One question: How deep are the scratches, and are these dull spots or actual surface damage? Depending on this, you might eventually consider replacement. Please share more details!

Under no circumstances use very coarse sandpaper, as it will damage the coating. 400 grit or finer is acceptable. Sand lightly and carefully, then wipe with a damp cloth.

Hello puiuno,

I think it’s great that you’re thinking carefully before you start sanding. This type of surface really requires caution.

A few basics:
- Metod countertops are coated engineered wood panels. The coating is thin and very delicate.
- Rough sanding not only damages the surface but can also affect the substrate board and cause swelling.

My advice:
- Test the sandpaper first in an inconspicuous spot.
- If the damage is just light surface scratches, often a treatment with a special kitchen care oil (for example, for melamine surfaces) is sufficient.
- Use sponges or soft cloths, and avoid abrasive cleaners.

If you have treated the surface after sanding, regular oiling is recommended to maintain it.

How did the marks on the countertop occur? Could that have affected the material?

Thank you for the note. These are mainly light scratches caused by kitchen utensils, with some areas where the surface has become slightly dull. There are no deep damages. The material is likely Ikea’s standard coating, which according to the manufacturer is melamine-coated. I would like to renovate the surface as much as possible without compromising the protective layer of the board.

Hey, I did something similar myself! I used very fine sandpaper (grit 400-600) and gently rubbed over the scratches. Don’t apply too much pressure, though, or you know, the surface could get damaged. After that, I treated it with a wood countertop conditioner, which really refreshed the surface! Give it a try, it’s quite satisfying to see the surface come back to life!
