Hello everyone, I am currently planning a kitchen project using IKEA METOD and am facing the challenge of cutting the countertops myself, as the standard sizes do not fit my measurements. My specific question is: What tools and techniques are best suited for cutting METOD countertops accurately and cleanly, without damaging the surface or edges? I am also interested in any special preparation steps I should consider, such as marking, using guide rails, or protective measures. Although I have basic experience with woodworking, I want to ensure the best possible outcome, especially when working with METOD panels. Thank you very much for your tips and recommendations!

It is best to use a plunge saw with a guide rail. This will help prevent tear-out on the surface. Smooth the edges beforehand with sandpaper.

For custom cutting the IKEA METOD countertops, I recommend the following procedure: - Measure and mark with a pencil or marking pen, preferably double-checking - Use an aluminum guide rail to ensure a straight cut - Use a plunge circular saw with a fine blade (e.g., 48 teeth, carbide-tipped), which reduces chipping - Smooth and bevel the edges after cutting with fine sandpaper (e.g., 220 grit) - If necessary, seal the cut edge with a suitable edge band to prevent moisture If you don’t have a plunge circular saw, a jigsaw with a fine blade can also be used, but cut slowly and carefully.

I know how frustrating it can be when things don’t go as planned—I experienced exactly that during my last kitchen design. That’s why I want to encourage you: with the right preparation, cutting the materials properly is definitely achievable. The most important thing, in my opinion, is to be patient and to carefully protect the edges so you don’t end up with any unwanted marks. Feel free to share which tools you have available, so you can get more targeted advice.

Technically, IKEA METOD countertops are usually made of particleboard with a melamine resin coating or a similarly laminated material. This means the cut edge should be as clean and splinter-free as possible to avoid costly rework. For cutting, a plunge circular saw with a fine carbide-tipped blade and guide rail is recommended to achieve straight and clean cuts. Before cutting, it is advisable to secure the cutting line with painter’s tape to minimize tear-out. Applying edge banding or wood glue afterward can protect the cut edge and improve its appearance.

Thank you for the detailed response. Unfortunately, I only have a jigsaw, not a plunge circular saw. Do you think it’s worth investing in such an expensive equipment just for this project? Or can I achieve a clean result with a jigsaw if I work carefully, for example by using painter’s tape?
