ᐅ How rust-resistant are the metal fittings used in Ikea Metod kitchen systems?

Hello everyone,

I am currently planning a kitchen renovation using the Ikea Metod system and was wondering about the rust resistance of the metal fittings in Metod. Specifically, I am interested in whether the hinges, drawer slides, and other metal parts have sufficient corrosion resistance, especially given that kitchens often involve moisture, steam, and occasional splashes.

Has anyone had experience with the durability of these metal fittings? In particular, I want to know if they remain rust-free over the long term under normal use, or if rust spots tend to appear quickly.

I currently use stainless steel fittings in my old kitchen and would like to understand whether Ikea uses regular galvanized steel parts or higher-quality materials, so I can make a better comparison.

I look forward to your insights, including any background information on the materials used or recommendations for care and protection.

Best regards!

Good morning kubeli,

to add something about the material quality: galvanized fittings typically have a zinc coating thickness of a few micrometers. IKEA uses industrial processes that are cost-effective and provide solid quality, but they are not comparable to hot-dip galvanized parts, for example, from the construction sector or stainless steel grade 1.4301.

The longer the zinc layer remains intact, the longer the component stays rust-free. If damage occurs during screwing or assembly, these areas should be protected afterward (e.g., with a zinc repair stick or paint). Many users report that stainless steel fittings allow for significantly longer, almost maintenance-free use – but they are more expensive.

Since your kitchen is humid, I recommend keeping the metal parts as dry as possible and, if possible, occasionally performing some maintenance. Spray or a light machine oil is ideal.

By the way, there is no official information from IKEA about the exact coating or quality of the fittings; only user experiences can help here.

Maybe after some time, you can share your own observations on how things are going for you.

One more tip: If you find rust, quickly treat the spot with some fine sandpaper and then apply corrosion protection oil. This often stops rust very easily.

I have the same system in my rental apartment—no rust marks, even though the kitchen is quite humid. The galvanized parts really seem to prevent that effectively! Still, I will apply some oil after reading your tips. Thanks!
