Hello everyone,

I am currently planning a kitchen renovation using the Ikea Metod system and was wondering about the rust resistance of the metal fittings in Metod. Specifically, I am interested in whether the hinges, drawer slides, and other metal parts have sufficient corrosion resistance, especially given that kitchens often involve moisture, steam, and occasional splashes.

Has anyone had experience with the durability of these metal fittings? In particular, I want to know if they remain rust-free over the long term under normal use, or if rust spots tend to appear quickly.

I currently use stainless steel fittings in my old kitchen and would like to understand whether Ikea uses regular galvanized steel parts or higher-quality materials, so I can make a better comparison.

I look forward to your insights, including any background information on the materials used or recommendations for care and protection.

Best regards!

Hey kubeli!

I have had my Metod kitchen for almost 3 years now and can only share positive experiences! The metal fittings are really durable, and so far no rust stains have appeared. In my opinion, the hinges are well galvanized, which prevents a lot of moisture. Of course, it’s important not to leave the kitchen wet and to wipe down the fittings from time to time!

So don’t worry about it—that’s typical everyday IKEA quality for me, and it holds up very well. 👍

The Metod fittings are electro-galvanized, making them relatively resistant to rust. However, moisture from cooking can slightly increase the risk of rust. Regular cleaning helps prevent this.

Hello kubeli,

I can understand your question well. IKEA typically uses steel parts with a zinc coating for Metod to prevent corrosion. This coating provides good protection under normal kitchen use, as Kolepau already mentioned.

It’s important to know that zinc coatings are quite durable, but mechanical damage (scratches, impacts) or prolonged exposure to moisture can still allow water to reach the steel, which may cause rust.

With regular maintenance, meaning keeping surfaces dry, rust formation should remain minimal or only appear after a long time. Stainless steel is of course better but also significantly more expensive.

If the kitchen is frequently exposed to high humidity and water splashes, it can be helpful to wipe the fittings with some oil or care product to create an additional protective layer.

Could you perhaps tell me how your kitchen is currently ventilated? That might help with the assessment.

The used metal parts in Metod are galvanized; they are not stainless steel. Under normal use, rust issues do not occur as long as you keep the metal surfaces dry.

Exactly! I occasionally lubricate my hinges with machine oil, especially since I have children at home who tend to drip liquids. This helps to greatly reduce the risk of rust and keeps the hinges running smoothly!
