Hello everyone,
I have assembled a Billy shelf unit from IKEA and am currently adjusting the doors. I noticed that there is a single screw for adjusting the door horizontally. My question is: How exactly does the door adjustment with this screw work on BILLY shelves, and is there a trick to make the door align perfectly flush with the cabinet? I want to avoid having to remove the door again or completely reattach the hinges.
It’s important for me to understand the process step by step, as I have only roughly adjusted the hinges so far and the result is less than ideal. Thanks in advance for your help!

Can you briefly explain how I can tell if the hinges themselves are installed correctly? To check the hinge position:
1. Tighten the hinges until they sit firmly and there are no loose parts.
2. Verify that the hinges are fully seated in the intended cutout of the cabinet frame.
3. Make sure the screws are not inserted at an angle.
These steps are crucial because even small deviations can affect the door alignment. Precise door positioning is only possible when the hinges are properly installed.
Here are some additional details about the screw adjustment:
The screw on the hinge is used to adjust the door horizontally and is often a fine-thread adjustment screw. Therefore, small turns are enough to achieve noticeable changes.
Additionally, some BILLY models also offer vertical height adjustment via a separate screw on the hinge base. It is advisable to adjust both screws systematically:
- First, the horizontal adjustment (turn the screw sideways to align the door).
- Then check the height and adjust if necessary.
I also recommend carefully opening and closing the door after each adjustment to check the functionality.

The door adjustment is done solely by turning the adjustment screw on the hinge. Turn it slowly and observe the door position carefully. Small corrections are better than large ones. If the door is misaligned, often just a minimal adjustment will help.
The hinges must, of course, be securely installed; otherwise, any adjustment is pointless.
