Hello everyone, I have a squeaky door on my Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet that has been getting louder over time. The door is attached with hinges, and I suspect the squeaking is coming from them. My question is: How can I reliably fix this squeak? Are there specific techniques or particular lubricants that are especially suitable for the Ikea Metod system? I also want to avoid impairing the door’s function or damaging the mechanism. I would appreciate detailed repair tips and any advice on components I should check to resolve the issue permanently.

The topic of dampers is very important. In Metod, the soft-close dampers are usually integrated into the hinge. If you apply lubricant to the dampers, you should use it very sparingly. The best procedure is:

- Remove the door, as suggested by BARSAN
- Lightly clean the hinge joints and moving parts with a lint-free cloth to remove old dirt
- Treat only the metal joints with dry silicone spray, and definitely not the dampers themselves
- After reassembly, open and close the door slowly several times to allow everything to settle

Liquid lubricants can be drawn into the damper mechanism and negatively affect its function.

I would also add that before applying lubricant, you should carefully check how old the hinges are and whether they might need to be replaced. Sometimes, even a slight misalignment of the door can cause the joints to stop functioning smoothly and start squeaking. Use the screws to adjust the hinges in order to reduce play or pressure.

Additionally:
- Use a high-quality Teflon spray, as it lasts longer than silicone spray.
- Avoid WD-40; it is a good cleaner but not a long-lasting lubricant.

If you follow these steps, you should be able to eliminate the squeaking quite reliably.

That’s interesting. I have noticed that the door became slightly misaligned when closing. Do you have any tips on how to best check and adjust the alignment for Metod hinges? Is there a specific order for tightening the screws that I should follow?

For adjustment:

- First, loosen or tighten the screw for horizontal alignment until the door is flush
- Adjust the vertical screw to set the height
- The depth can be adjusted using a third screw on the hinge

Keep opening and closing the door slightly to check the result throughout the process.

Small addition:

The Metod hinge mechanism consists of two main parts: the hinge arm, which is attached to the cabinet side, and the hinge plate on the door. Both parts can be adjusted individually. To eliminate squeaking and optimize alignment at the same time, follow these steps:

- Unhang the door from its mounting (release the hinges using clips)
- Remove the hinge arm from the cabinet screw together with the mounting plate
- Clean both parts thoroughly, removing any dirt from the hinge housing
- Lightly spray the joints with PTFE (Teflon) spray, avoid spraying the damper itself
- Rehang the door, initially fastening screws loosely
- Begin adjustment with the horizontal screw of the mounting plate on the cabinet
- Then adjust the height using the vertical screws on the hinge arm
- Finally, set the depth using the screw on the hinge arm
- Test the door after each adjustment
- Important: Avoid overtightening to prevent damage to screws and plastic components

Since squeaking is often caused by increased friction due to a misaligned hinge, correct adjustment significantly improves movement and prevents further noise.
