Hello everyone, I have a rather persistent question: How can I permanently fix a squeaking Ikea Metod kitchen door? The door squeaks every time it is opened and closed, especially at the hinge. I have already tried simple lubricants like WD-40 – which helped temporarily, but the problem quickly returns. Is there perhaps a more durable solution, maybe involving different materials or replacing certain parts? I would like to know how to address the underlying wear long-term without having to replace the entire door or the whole hinge. Thanks for your advice!

You mentioned PTFE spray and silicone spray – should I prefer one, or is it useful to combine both?

Basically, you should choose a lubricant suitable for moving metal parts that is neither sticky nor attracts dirt. PTFE spray is my favorite because it is very durable and provides good protection. Silicone spray is also effective, especially when plastic components are involved. Combining both is not necessary and can even be counterproductive, as different substances may interfere with each other.

How can I tell if the hinges are worn out and definitely need to be replaced?

Look for loose or wobbly hinges, noticeable scratches on the contact surfaces, or if the door no longer closes properly or is sagging. Mechanical play when opening or closing is a good indicator.

As a supplement: A worn hinge can also be identified by persistent squeaking despite thorough cleaning and lubrication. A visual inspection for rust, cracks, or worn areas on the spring or pivot is also advisable. If possible, compare the hinge with a new one to clearly identify wear.

If the looseness in the metal has increased due to wobbling, replacement is better. Otherwise, just lubricate.

Thanks for your explanations, very helpful! I have a practical question: Can I simply remove and reinstall the Ikea Metod hinges, or are there specific mounting points or tools I need? I want to do it properly without damaging the door.

Hello Pascalja, Ikea Metod hinges are usually quite easy to remove. You typically only need a Phillips screwdriver. The hinges are mostly attached to the cabinet frame and the door with screws and can be removed without much effort. It is important to support the door well when loosening the hinge to prevent it from shifting or getting damaged. When reinstalling the hinges, you should pay attention to the alignment to ensure the door does not wobble later on.

Yes, that's correct – the hinges are designed to be removed with little to no tools, or at least with a standard screwdriver. There are often small levers or clips at the hinge base that you can release. Make sure to keep the screws safe. When reinstalling, a bit of patience is needed to tighten all screws properly to avoid any wobbling.
