PascaljaHello everyone, I have a rather persistent question: How can I permanently fix a squeaking Ikea Metod kitchen door? The door squeaks every time it is opened and closed, especially at the hinge. I have already tried simple lubricants like WD-40 – which helped temporarily, but the problem quickly returns. Is there perhaps a more durable solution, maybe involving different materials or replacing certain parts? I would like to know how to address the underlying wear long-term without having to replace the entire door or the whole hinge. Thanks for your advice!
Hello Pascalja, a very well-written post! The squeaking of Ikea Metod doors often comes from metal-on-metal contact in the hinge mechanisms. WD-40 is a good short-term lubricant, but it does not contain long-lasting lubricants that adhere well. For a more durable solution, I recommend using a dry PTFE spray or silicone spray, as these are non-sticky and help keep the hinge mechanism clean. It is also advisable to check the hinges occasionally and, if necessary, gently tighten the screws. Another option is to replace the washer rings or bushings, if present. Sometimes small felt or plastic pads at contact points can also help reduce friction.
Hello, adding to Julien’s input: Ikea Metod hinges are usually steel spring-loaded hinges with a small amount of lubricant. The squeaking noise is caused by a missing or contaminated lubricant film. For a long-lasting fix, it is recommended to clean the hinges with a suitable solvent (for example, isopropanol) before applying a PTFE-based lubricant. After that, specialized thin lubricants that do not harden can also be used. It is equally important to check whether the hinges are damaged, as mechanical defects can otherwise cause recurring noise.

Clean the hinges thoroughly, spray them with silicone spray, and then open and close the doors several times so the spray distributes evenly. After that, the noise became much quieter for me. You can do it!
Thank you for the helpful answers so far! I have two more questions: 1. You mention PTFE spray and silicone spray – should I prefer one, or is it useful to use both together? 2. How can I tell if the hinges are worn out and definitely need to be replaced? Are there visual signs, or can you feel it mechanically when opening?
