Hello everyone, I recently installed an Ikea Metod kitchen system and noticed that some doors do not close properly. The problem is that after pushing them, they either don’t fully latch or they pop open again shortly afterward. I have already tried adjusting the hinges without success. My question is: What could be the possible causes for the Metod doors not closing correctly, and what steps can I take to reliably fix this? I am especially interested in practical tips for adjustment or common weak points that are often overlooked. Thank you in advance for your help!

To me, this sounds like an issue with the hinges themselves or possibly incorrect alignment. I’m curious whether you have checked if the hinges are properly chosen for the specific door weights and sizes? Often, standardized hinges are used even though some doors have special requirements.

It would also be interesting to know exactly how you performed the adjustment. The Metod hinges offer several adjustment options – depth, height, and lateral. Was all of this taken into account, or did you focus on just one screw?

In my opinion, it’s important to proceed systematically and follow a precise sequence. Otherwise, the effectiveness is reduced.

I’m familiar with this problem; it’s really frustrating, especially when you’ve put a lot of time and effort into assembling everything. I understand how unreliable door closures can be quite annoying. In my experience, slight warping of the doors themselves—meaning minimal material deformation—often causes small changes in the gaps that interfere with the locking mechanism.

Maybe check carefully whether the door is perfectly flat. You can do this by using a spirit level or simply looking from the side to see if there is any bend or bulge. If so, sometimes a minor adjustment or replacement can help.

I hope you find a quick solution!

Hello Annemari40, I’m happy to pick this up and give you an overview of how to proceed:

- First, check if all the hinges are properly installed, meaning all screws are tight.
- Look to see if the hinges are firmly anchored to the frame, as some play can keep the door from moving smoothly.
- Adjust the hinges: Ikea Metod hinges have three adjustment screws:
- Side (for the distance to the cabinet side)
- Height (for vertical alignment)
- Depth (for closing the door)
- For closing, the depth adjustment and checking the hinge springs are especially important.
- If the springs are ‘worn out,’ closing the door can become difficult. A new spring can help in this case.

If this does not improve the situation, repositioning the door or replacing the hinges completely may help. Sometimes manufacturing tolerances or transport damage cause such issues.

When adjusting, it’s best to use a screwdriver and test with small adjustments. Do not force the doors, as this can cause damage.

Check if the hinges are dirty or damaged. Often, simply cleaning and lightly oiling them helps.

Additionally, it might be that the back panel is not properly aligned, causing the doors to jam against the stop.

I’ll approach the problem from a more technical perspective:

- The Ikea Metod hinges are clip-on hinges with a spring mechanism that helps close the door. The closing force can be adjusted using the adjustment screws.
- It’s worth checking all hinges on a door because even a slightly misaligned hinge can cause the door to hang unevenly or not close properly.
- My advice: First, make sure all hinges are secured with the correct screws, both on the cabinet carcass and the door.
- The load capacity of the hinges should also match the door size; large or heavy doors require stronger or specialized hinges.
- Adjustment tip: Loosen the height adjustment screws first, then position the door as needed, and finally tighten the screws carefully to prevent shifting.
- Regarding the spring: If the door pushes open instead of closing, it could mean the spring has lost tension or is damaged. In that case, consider ordering new hinges.
- Also, make sure the door is not too heavy or the hinges are overloaded, as this can also affect closing performance.

How did you compare the door dimensions? Sometimes even a minimal difference in width or height can cause such issues.

Which manufacturing series are your Metod locks from? The Ikea forum occasionally mentions certain series with quality problems.
