Hello everyone,

I have a problem with squeaky hinges on my IKEA Billy bookcases. These are the standard metal hinges that, over time and with use, start making quite loud and unpleasant noises. My specific question is: What is the best way to repair or maintain these Billy hinges to stop them from squeaking? I would prefer not to buy new parts but rather use lubrication or something similar.

Are there any special products recommended for lubricating hinges, such as oil-based or dry lubricants? Also, do I need to remove the hinge completely, or is it sufficient to maintain them while they are still installed? I look forward to your tips and experiences!

I did it like this: opened the door, sprayed the hinge thoroughly, moved the door back and forth several times. After that, no more noise. I use silicone spray, which works best for simple hinges.

Hello Nikitaja,

Your description of the problem is already very clear. The Billy hinges are not mechanically very complex but consist of several moving parts that can squeak if not properly lubricated.

I recommend the following approach:

1. Thoroughly clean the hinges, for example with a dry cloth and, if necessary, a mild cleaner.
2. Then use a dry lubricant, such as Teflon spray, as it does not attract dust.
3. Keep the hinges open while spraying so the lubricant can penetrate all the joints.
4. Open and close the door several times to distribute the lubricant.

Removing the hinge is usually unnecessary. If you decide to take the hinge off completely, keep in mind that you will need to readjust it precisely afterward, which can take some time.

I hope this helps you!

Additionally: If the hinge is already showing some rust, treat it first with a rust remover and then lubricate it.

This exact order is important. If cleaned improperly, oil or spray can trap dirt, causing the mechanism to wear out even faster.

Additionally: avoid grease, as it tends to attract dirt indoors and can clog the mechanism.

Stay away from grease

Absolutely! Grease on hinges is like Christmas decorations for household dust ;-) Silicone or Teflon is really the proper caretaker here!

Thanks for putting it so clearly, it also explains why grease always caused noise for me 🙂
