Hello everyone,

I have assembled a Billy shelf unit from IKEA and am currently adjusting the doors. I noticed that there is a single screw for adjusting the door horizontally. My question is: How exactly does the door adjustment with this screw work on BILLY shelves, and is there a trick to make the door align perfectly flush with the cabinet? I want to avoid having to remove the door again or completely reattach the hinges.

It’s important for me to understand the process step by step, as I have only roughly adjusted the hinges so far and the result is less than ideal. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello Jasumin,

Adjusting the BILLY cabinet doors using the screw is actually quite simple once you understand how the mechanism works. The screw you are referring to is usually a cam or adjustment screw on the hinge. By turning this screw, you can move the door horizontally to the left or right without removing the door.

It is important to make small adjustments and repeatedly check whether the door closes flush. If you turn the screw too much, the door may become misaligned. A useful tip is to turn the screw in quarter-turn increments and then test the door.

If the door needs vertical adjustment as well as horizontal, there is usually a second screw that controls the height. Overall, patience is required, but this can be done easily without changing tools or completely dismantling the door.

Exactly, to be precise: the hinges on BILLY shelves are designed to allow the door to be adjusted in three dimensions. The screw responsible for horizontal alignment moves the door sideways.

Practical tip: If the door doesn’t sit flush with the cabinet, it’s worth checking the hinge position on the shelf itself to ensure it is installed correctly. Some hinges also include small plastic bushings that can be carefully moved if the screw adjustment alone is not sufficient.

In summary: turn the screw, test the door, repeat – but also check the installation.

The screw is used for lateral adjustment. Turn it slowly and check the door after each quarter turn. This way, you can align the door precisely without removing it.

Thank you, that’s a good point. I have only roughly installed the hinges; perhaps the screws are a bit loose or not placed with millimeter accuracy in the intended position.

Could you please briefly explain how I can precisely determine whether the hinges themselves are correctly mounted, or if I should adjust their position? Since the unstable screw fixing could affect the result, I would like to proceed systematically.

The hinges should be firmly in place and properly seated in the designated holes. Rubber pads or plastic dowels, as commonly used by IKEA, must be correctly installed. Check for any looseness before tightening. You can only slightly adjust the position by loosening the screws a bit and realigning.
