Hello everyone, I am currently facing an issue with my new BILLY shelves from IKEA. I noticed that some of these shelves are missing screws or connectors, which makes assembly much more difficult or even impossible. My specific question is: Are there known reasons or common causes for missing screws or connectors in some BILLY shelves? Is this something IKEA does intentionally, are there manufacturing or packaging defects, or is it more related to transport and storage? I would like to understand how often this problem occurs for others and what the best way to handle it is. Thank you in advance for your informed responses!

Hello Nukar, generally speaking, missing parts are quite rare with large furniture manufacturers like IKEA, but of course not entirely impossible. IKEA has strict quality control processes in production and packaging designed to minimize such errors.

However, mistakes can occur during manufacturing, especially if the packaging is damaged during or after production, or if parts are incorrectly sorted in the workshop. Transportation damage can also be a cause—for example, if the packaging is opened and parts are lost. Proper inspection upon goods receipt in the warehouse and during picking is also important.

In your case, I would recommend contacting IKEA customer service directly first to check whether replacement parts can be ordered. Some parts are standardized and often quickly available.

I’m also curious whether you inspected the packaging for damage before opening, and if all boxes were complete?

From a logistics and quality control perspective, there are clear inspection procedures used by IKEA to prevent parts from being lost. The BILLY models are either fully packaged on production lines or prepared in subassemblies, with all necessary fasteners listed in the package.

When screws or connectors are missing, it usually occurs in two cases: either there is an unexpected production issue, or packaging gets damaged during shipping and storage, causing parts to fall out. However, the proportion of such errors in total production is very low.

There are reports that some customers are missing parts due to returns or repackaging. Different batches can also sometimes vary slightly in the included components, which may increase confusion.

In general, I recommend carefully checking the parts against the assembly instructions. Missing parts should be documented and reported to IKEA. Customer service is usually very reliable in sending replacements.

In my case, small connecting parts are regularly missing because the packaging sometimes arrives damaged. Check the packaging carefully and report missing parts to IKEA, as they usually provide replacements quickly.

One important point to keep in mind: Some screws or connectors may be packed separately in small bags or hidden within the instruction manual. Especially due to the many variations in BILLY, parts can easily be overlooked.

Also, bulk packs or sets can sometimes contain different components – so comparing them with the exact instructions often helps. If parts are truly missing, it is advisable to contact IKEA directly and provide an exact list of the missing items.

That may be true, but missing screws are not accidental and could also be due to IKEA pricing certain shelving units very tightly, meaning not all parts are included as standard in every package.

It would be interesting to know whether the original poster checked with IKEA if the model is sold with different configurations or if some components are marked as optional in the assembly instructions.

I also find it important not to immediately assume production errors here but to question whether the missing parts are truly necessary or if IKEA has intentionally designed this to save costs.
